University of Birmingham

Arriving at Birmingham New Street

Birmingham New Street is the city’s main rail gateway and the primary station for visitors travelling to the University of Birmingham. Centrally located in the heart of the city, Birmingham New Street offers frequent and direct rail services to the University station, and the journey takes just over 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can also take a taxi or bus in about 20 minutes, or you can cover the 3-mile distance to campus on foot in just under an hour.

Served by leading train operators including Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, West Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, and Transport for Wales, Birmingham New Street provides excellent nationwide connectivity, with regular services to London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and other major cities. It’s also easily accessible via local trains, West Midlands Metro trams, buses, and taxis. Travellers will find a full range of amenities at the station, including ticket offices, self-service machines, information desks, toilets, luggage storage, cafés, restaurants, and convenience shops.

Popular train routes to the University of Birmingham

London to the University of Birmingham trains

Frequent trains run between London Euston and Birmingham New Street from 5:30 in the morning to 11:30 at night. The 120-mile journey takes around 1 hour 20 minutes, and from Birmingham New Street, it’s a quick 15-minute ride or taxi to University station. Services are run by Avanti West Coast and West Midlands Railway. First Class is only available on Avanti trains and includes lounge access and bigger seats, as well as complementary drinks and snacks. Key stops include Milton Keynes, Coventry, and Birmingham International.

Manchester to the University of Birmingham trains

There are frequent train services between Manchester Piccadilly and Birmingham New Street starting at around 5:00 a.m. and finishing around 10:00 p.m. The 85-mile journey takes about 1 hour 25 minutes, with then a quick 15-minute train or taxi ride to University station. Services are provided by both CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast. First Class is available on both services, featuring larger seats, free W-Fi and complementary drinks and snacks on board. Notable stops include Crewe and Wolverhampton.

Edinburgh to the University of Birmingham trains

Direct trains from Edinburgh Waverley to Birmingham New Street operate throughout the day, starting around 6:00 AM and concluding just before 7:00 PM for same-day arrivals. The 290-mile journey typically takes approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes. Upon arriving at Birmingham New Street, the University is conveniently accessible with a quick 15-minute ride or taxi. These direct services are provided by Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry, both offering First Class options. First Class passengers enjoy benefits such as lounge access, larger seats, and complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Common stops on this route include Stafford, Warrington, and Preston.
