Why midweek trains can be cheaper?

Midweek trains (at Off-Peak times) can be cheaper than weekends because fewer people use the railways, which means more availability of cheaper Advance Fares. For example, Manchester to Leeds is more for commuters and business travellers, so it may be cheaper on weekends. London to Margate, however, is a leisure route, so it is often pricier on Saturdays and Sundays when people head for days out.

On weekdays or weekends, events can affect things, too. If the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs are playing away to Man City or United, expect trains from London to Manchester to be more expensive. Advance

Anytime

As these are more flexible tickets - allowing you to travel on any service at any time of day, with free cancellation - Anytime is usually the most expensive ticket type. If you book last minute, it's often only these left available, which is why you see a higher price.

Off-Peak

This fare type gives you most of the flexibility of Anytime, but with one important exception. You can travel on any train that day but only during Off-Peak hours, which for most of the country is before 6:30 am and after 9:30 am.
