Can you use screenshots of train tickets in the UK?

A screenshot might look identical to the original ticket on your screen, but whether it's accepted or not depends on how the operator's ticketing system validates it.

Most UK e-tickets use a static QR code or barcode that doesn't change once issued, which means that a screenshot of that code will often scan just as well as the original. The exception is m-tickets, issued by certain operators, which use dynamic barcodes that refresh every few seconds. And a screenshot of one of those becomes invalid almost immediately after it's taken.

Even where static barcodes are used, scanning systems are generally designed to read live ticket files rather than screen captures, and there's no guarantee that every ticket scanner or conductor will accept a screenshot in place of the original.

To understand why a screenshot might fail, it helps to know a little bit about how e-ticket scanning works. When a conductor or ticket reader scans a ticket, they're not simply checking whether the barcode looks right; the scanner communicates with a backend system to verify that the ticket is live, unused, and linked to a valid booking.

Some operators issue m-tickets that use dynamic barcodes as a fraud-prevention measure, ensuring that a screenshot can't be shared or used by anyone other than the original purchaser. Because the barcode refreshes every few seconds, a screenshot will already be out of date the moment it’s taken.

Even for standard e-tickets with static barcodes, the full ticket file contains much more than just an image. It carries booking and passenger data that a screenshot can't replicate. Fraud prevention systems are also designed to flag anything not pulled directly from a verified source, which is why even a screenshot of a legitimate ticket can often fail a validation check.

In practice, screenshots can and do work in many situations. On quieter routes or during manual ticket checks, a conductor scanning a static barcode from a screenshot often has no issue, and plenty of travellers use them regularly without problems.

That said, a screenshot isn't an officially recognised ticket format, and whether it's accepted depends entirely on the operator, the scanning equipment, and even the individual member of staff. What passes without comment on one route may well be questioned on another.

For that reason, screenshots aren't reliable. In an emergency, a screenshot may well get you through, but it's not a substitute for having your ticket accessible through your booking app, as a downloaded PDF, or via the QR code in your confirmation email.

If you’ve lost access to your train app and booking confirmation email, and a screenshot is all you have, the first step is to try recovering access to your ticket before you travel. Connect to the station’s Wi-Fi, reload your booking app, or check your email for the original confirmation and the ticket PDF. Most booking platforms also let you log in via a browser, so you don't need the app itself to retrieve your ticket.

If the ticket still won't load, head to the ticket office or a help point before attempting the barrier. Staff can usually locate a booking using your reference number, so it's worth having that to hand if you can.

For the future, the most reliable approach is to open your ticket PDF directly from your email and keep it downloaded on your device, so it's accessible without a signal. Many booking apps also let you save tickets to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which loads instantly without the need for an internet connection.

Can I use a screenshot of my train ticket?
