Is First Class ever cheaper than Standard on trains?

Is First Class ever cheaper than Standard on trains?
When you're comparing First Class versus Standard Class train prices, you often expect the premium option to come in more expensive. After all, you get more room, privacy and often special perks like lounge access and complimentary food. And while it normally is pricier, there are exceptions. But is that always actually the case?

In this guide, we'll dispel the myths and explain exactly when First Class train tickets are cheaper than Standard Class in the UK. We'll explain why this happens, when you're most likely to find these cheap First Class tickets and whether the upgrade is worth it.

Is First Class ever cheaper than Standard?

Yes, First Class can be cheaper than Standard Class on UK trains - but this is very rare. It all comes down to how train ticket classes and pricing work in the UK. Here's an explanation as to why and when this could happen:

UK dynamic pricing and train ticket types explained

For most operators, pricing is dynamic, which means it changes with demand. There are different fare buckets, with varying levels of discounts and flexibility. These include:

  • Advance - Discounted but more restrictive fare. You have to book a specific departure time, and there's a fee (plus fare difference) if you want to change. They're also non-refundable and often have to be booked by a certain amount of time before departure.
  • Anytime - More expensive, but more flexible fares. You can travel on any train during a defined period of time, and the tickets are refundable if you need to cancel. You can book anytime right up until departure.
  • Off-Peak - Same as Anytime, except only valid during Off-Peak hours.

Within these fare buckets, there are different pricing tiers. Each tier only has a set number of tickets available, and once these sell out, the price jumps to the next available tier.

Naturally, on busier trains and closer to the departure date, there are fewer cheaper tickets available as these sell out in advance. That's why it's usually more expensive to book last-minute.

What this means for First Class vs Standard Class pricing

These fare buckets and pricing tiers are separate for both Standard and First Class. So, if on a particular departure time, all the discounted Advance tickets have sold out in Standard but are still available in First Class, the Advance fare for First Class can be cheaper than the Anytime fare in Standard Class. This is rare, but it can happen.

In this case, the difference would be between your fare conditions. Your Advance First Class ticket would allow you to sit in the premium carriage, but you'd only be able to travel on that specific departure time with no refund available if you decided not to travel.

Compare that to an Anytime ticket in Standard Class - you'd have to sit in Standard Class, but would be able to travel on any train that day and, if your plans change, you could get a refund.

When are you most likely to find cheap First Class tickets?

You're most likely to find cheap First Class fares when demand is low, and there's plenty of availability. In practice, that means:

Travelling at quieter times of day

During the week, this involves travelling from 10 am to 3 pm (when most people are at work or school) or after 7.30 pm in the evening (when many people have finished for the day). On weekends, it's usually cheaper to travel early in the morning before 10 am.

Using the train on less busy days of the week

Tuesdays to Thursdays are generally quieter on the railways with fewer people travelling across the country. Mondays and Fridays are often the busiest days, while weekends are a mixed bag and depend on the route, time of year and events taking place.

Booking early

Advance fares go on sale usually around 12 weeks before departure, and this is when there's the widest availability across all pricing tiers. As fares sell, the prices go up.

Looking for more competitive routes

If there are multiple train companies operating between your A and B, you'll often find they have to compete on price, meaning you can score cheaper First Class train deals.

Is First Class worth it?

First Class is worth it if you're seeking a more comfortable journey with privacy and room to stretch out in a quieter space. It's especially handy on busy commuter routes where you'll be guaranteed a seat, and on long-haul journeys where the extra legroom and quieter carriage make all the difference.

Just keep in mind that First Class isn't always a big step up compared to Standard Class - it depends on the operator. On many shorter routes, like those in the South and South East of England, the difference is fairly minor. First Class is often even declassified on busy commuter routes to make room for more passengers.

On long-haul operators, though, it's a different story. The likes ofCrossCountry,Avanti West Coast,Great Western Railway,East Midlands Railway,LNER andTransPennine Express have seriously upgraded carriages where you'll notice the difference between First and Standard.

Think bigger seats, more leg room, complimentary dining and First Class lounges at your departure station.

How to find cheap First Class train tickets with TrainPal

You can use the Journey Planner on TrainPal to quickly find cheap First Class tickets. Just remember that there's no separate button for First Class. You search as normal and check the fare types on each train. Here's how:

  1. Enter your route and dates: Add your "From" and "To" stations, pick your travel date, choose the number of passengers and hit search.
  2. Look through the results: Each departure shows the Standard fare as the headline price.
  3. Click on a departure to see all fares: This opens up the full list of ticket types for that train, including First Class.
  4. Compare the options: Check the First Class fares against Standard - on the right train, you might find First works out cheaper, or close enough to make the upgrade worthwhile.
  5. Select and book: Choose your ticket, add passenger details and pay. Your e-tickets arrive by email and in the app.

It's worth checking a few different departures, too. Fares vary train by train, so the First Class price on the 14:15 might be lower than the Standard fare on the 14:45.
