Planning your journey: Trains from Florence to Pisa

By Enrico Belcore | Updated August 6, 2026

Departure station: Departing from Firenze Santa Maria Novella (SMN)

Firenze Santa Maria Novella, abbreviated to Firenze SMN, is Florence's main railway station. It sits right in the city centre, a short walk from the Duomo and the basilica of Santa Maria Novella, easy to reach from most central hotels. Both regional and intercity trains depart from the station.

Selecting your station: SMN vs. Le Piagge, or Rifredi

Trains to Pisa can depart from three different stations. Firenze SMN is the main departure point for most of the intercity and regional services, and where the vast majority of travellers will board, easily the most central and convenient option. If your ticket shows Firenze Rifredi, note that it sits around 3 km northwest of the city centre. Some regional services originate there before stopping at SMN a few minutes later, so if your ticket permits it, simply board at SMN instead and save the detour. Le Piagge is a small suburban stop on the western outskirts of Florence, occasionally listed on regional timetables as a departure point. Again, trains calling there tend to stop at SMN shortly after, so boarding centrally is almost always the more practical option. If in doubt, always head to SMN first and confirm your train stops there before making your way to either of the smaller stations.

Onsite amenities and tips

The Firenze SMN station has a restaurant, a pharmacy, and a bank on the mezzanine level. For a quick caffeine fix, the café inside the main concourse serves espresso at the bar, as well as classic italian cornetto and snacks.

Left luggage: The official luggage storage at SMN is run by Kibag and is located inside the station along platform 16 — follow the blue "Luggage Storage" signs. There's also a street-side entrance on Via Valfonda, and it's open daily from 07:00 to 21:00. Prices start at around €6 for the first five hours.

Arrival station: Arriving at Pisa Centrale

You'll arrive at Pisa Centrale, the city's main station, located at the southern edge of the historic centre. It connects Pisa with Florence, Rome, Genoa, and La Spezia. The station is well equipped — you'll find a taxi rank, bus stops, a tourist information office with free city maps, and a luggage storage service inside (€5 per bag), handy if you want to explore hands-free before catching a train onwards.

How to reach the Leaning Tower of Pisa?

Pisa San Rossore is actually the station closest to the Leaning Tower, just an 8-minute walk from the Piazza dei Miracoli complex — compared to around 25–30 minutes on foot from Pisa Centrale.
Only Regionale trains stop at San Rossore, and trains from Florence call there after Pisa Centrale. So if your train does stop there, stay on board one extra stop rather than getting off at Centrale. If it doesn't, you have two options: hop on a local connecting train from Centrale to San Rossore or use one of these options:
  • LAM Rossa bus (€1–3, ~10 min, stop "Torre 1") – the cheapest option.

  • A taxi from the rank outside the main exit runs €10–15 and drops you at the plaza in around 7 minutes.

  • Walk and cross the Arno and the beautiful city's historical centre, following Via Roma north for a pleasant 20–30 minute stroll.

Florence to Pisa – regional or intercity. What to choose?

On this short Tuscan hop, you have more train options than you might expect. The route is dominated by Trenitalia, Italy's state rail operator, running regionale and regionale veloce services to more affordable regional trains.

Regionale & Regionale Veloce

  • Avg. duration: around 50 minutes to 1 hour
  • Best for: Almost everyone — day-trippers, budget travellers, and anyone heading straight to the Leaning Tower.
  • Onboard perks: Air conditioning and luggage space; no café car, so bring your own water or snack.
  • Worth knowing: Fares are fixed — buying on the day costs exactly the same as booking in advance. No seat reservation required; just hop on and sit where you like. Regionale Veloce makes fewer intermediate stops and shaves a few minutes off the journey.
Only Regionale trains stop at Pisa San Rossore — the station closest to the Leaning Tower.

Intercity

  • Avg. duration: around 1 hour
  • Best for: Those who prefer assigned seating and a slightly more comfortable ride for a modest price premium.
  • Onboard perks: Assigned seats in First or Second Class, air conditioning, luggage racks, and a bar service on most services — a step up from Regionale without the dynamic pricing of high-speed trains.
  • Worth knowing: Unlike Regionale fares, Intercity tickets are tied to a specific train and seat reservation is required — but prices are still considerably lower than Frecciarossa or Italo. Intercity trains do not stop at Pisa San Rossore, so if the Leaning Tower is your destination, the Regionale remains the smarter pick for that final kilometre advantage.

Florence to Pisa travel tips

Validate your ticket before boarding

Regionale tickets are not tied to a specific departure, you can use yours on any train that day, but you must stamp it in one of the small green or yellow validation machines on the platform or in the station concourse before you board. Failure to validate, even with a valid ticket, can result in an on-the-spot fine.

Tickets bought via an app (TrainPal, Trenitalia, or Italo) are already validated digitally — no machine needed. One less thing to worry about.

Track your train in real time

Italian regional trains are generally punctual, but minor delays do happen — especially in summer when the network is busiest. If you are booking through TrainPal, you can track your train's live status directly in the app, so you'll know on the platform whether to relax with that espresso a little longer or start walking briskly.

Enjoy the view

The Florence–Pisa line passes through the gentle hills and vineyards of the Arno valley — sit on the left side of the train departing from Florence for the best views. The route also skips through the small town of Empoli, a worthwhile stop in its own right if you're planning a slower, more exploratory trip through Tuscany.

Take advantage of discounts

The route has solid options for reduced fares beyond just booking early:

  • Travelling with family? FrecciaFAMILY allows kids under 15 to travel free, with adults getting 50% off the Base fare on Frecce trains.
  • Group of 3–5? The Insieme offer gives up to 60% off the Base fare on intercity trains.
  • Italo users aged 14-29? Italo Young offers up to 70% off in Smart class for bookings made at least 11 days before departure.

All of these promotions are searchable and bookable in one place on TrainPal page dedicated to the Italian rail system.

*Information is subject to change. Please check the latest train timetable before your trip.

Florence to Pisa train classes

Italy's high-speed trains (such as the Frecciarossa and Italo services) offer multiple classes of travel, ranging from Standard up to Executive.

The mid-tier and traditional intercity services (Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, and Intercity) typically offer a simpler choice between two classes, whereas the local commuter trains (Regionale) only have a single standard seating area.

Compare these options to find the perfect ticket for your journey from Florence to Pisa.
