University of Manchester

Arriving at Manchester Piccadilly

With national services from London, the nearest train station to the University of Manchester is Manchester Piccadilly. Located in the heart of the city, Manchester Piccadilly provides excellent access to the University of Manchester, with direct train services to Oxford Road station taking just 6 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a bus from nearby Piccadilly Gardens in around 15 minutes, or enjoy a 20-minute walk to campus. 

Manchester Oxford Road is slightly closer, just a 10-minute walk away from the university faculties, and can be easily reached from a variety of cities across the north of England and Wales, including Edinburgh and Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester Airport.

Located on the main north-south west coast mainline, Manchester Piccadilly can be easily reached from London, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Liverpool and Bristol Temple Meads, and is served by operators Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales. Manchester Piccadilly offers essential amenities including ticket machines, information desks, accessible toilets and waiting areas as well as a variety of food, drink, and shopping options.

London to the University of Manchester trains

Frequent trains are running between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly between 5:30 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. The approximately 200-mile journey takes just over 2 hours. Once you arrive at Piccadilly, it’s just a short bus ride to the university. Direct services are operated by Avanti West Coast, which also offers First Class travel, with pre-departure lounge access, spacious seating, and complementary drinks and snacks. Major stops include Crewe, Warrington, and Stoke-on-Trent.

Birmingham to the University of Manchester trains

Travel the around 85-mile journey from Birmingham New Street to Manchester Piccadilly by train with services starting around 6:00 a.m. and running until 100:00 p.m. There are direct services with CrossCountry which take about 90 minutes, and there’s also a First Class carriage on board, which comes with more spacious seating and complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Notable stops include Stafford and Crewe.

Edinburgh to the University of Manchester trains

Trains run from Edinburgh Waverley to Manchester Piccadilly from around 6:00 a.m. until just before 7:00 p.m., and this approximately 260-mile journey takes about 3 hours and 40 minutes. Direct services are operated by TransPennine Express, and also stop at Oxford Road station, from where it’s just a 10-minute walk to the university. First Class onboard TransPennine Express services features spacious reclining seats, extra legroom, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, and complementary drinks and snacks on most services. Key stops include Carlisle, Preston, and Warrington.
