Anytime vs Advance train tickets explained

Search for almost any UK train journey, and you’ll likely see the same thing – a range of fares for the same route, often with a striking gap between the cheapest and most expensive options. Both an Advance ticket and an Anytime ticket will get you from A to B on the same route, but an Advance ticket might cost a fraction of the price of an Anytime ticket. So what actually is the difference between them?

The short answer is that for most UK train fares, there’s a trade-off between price and flexibility. The cheaper the ticket, the more restrictions it carries. The more freedom you need, the more you pay. Understanding how each fare type works and when it makes the most sense to choose one over the other can make a real difference to how much your journey costs and how flexible it might be.

This guide unpacks the two main fare types you'll see when booking UK train tickets – Advance and Anytime. It explains how each one works, what the key differences are, and how to decide which is the best option for your journey.

book UK train tickets

What are Advance train tickets?

On most UK routes, Advance train tickets are often the cheapest fares available. They’re fixed, non-refundable single tickets tied to a specific train on a specific date. This means, when you book an Advance ticket, you’re reserving a place on one particular service, and that is the train you need to travel on.

Tickets are typically released up to 12 weeks before departure, with fares coming out in tiers, with the lowest prices available first. Once one tier sells out, the next price band becomes available, so costs rise as the departure date approaches. So, the earlier you book, the better your chances of securing the lowest price.

There are a few other key points to know about Advance tickets:

  • Advance tickets are singles, not returns: To make a return journey using Advance fares, you need to book two separate singles – one for the outward leg and one for the return. This is often still cheaper than an Anytime return, but ties you to two specific services.
  • Advance tickets are non-refundable: If your plans change, you won’t be entitled to travel on a different service. Some operators will allow you to change onto a later departure, subject to a fee and any difference in fare.
  • Advance tickets must be booked before the day of travel: You cannot buy an Advance ticket at the station on the day you intend to travel.
  • Advance tickets are available in Standard and First Class: On popular long-distance routes, booking First Class in advance can sometimes be surprisingly affordable compared to buying on the day.

What are Anytime tickets?

Anytime train tickets sit at the opposite end of the fare spectrum. They offer complete flexibility, allowing you to travel on any train on your chosen route on the day or days your ticket covers, with no need to commit to a specific service.

Anytime tickets come in four types: Anytime Day Single (one-way, same-day travel), Anytime Day Return (return on the same day), Anytime Single (one-way, valid on the date shown), and Anytime Return (valid for travel out and back within one month of the outward journey).

But because they carry no time restrictions, Anytime tickets are typically the most expensive fare type available. You're paying for the flexibility to catch any train on the route, whether that's the 07:05 express or the 19:30 stopping service. Miss one train, though, and you can simply just take the next.

Anytime tickets can also be bought at any point, including on the day of travel via an app or at the station, and they're generally refundable, making them a lower-risk choice if your plans aren't 100% fixed.

Key differences between Anytime and Advance tickets

While the main difference between Advance and Anytime fares is often framed as price versus flexibility, the practical distinctions are a little more nuanced than that.

On price, the gap between Advance and Anytime tickets can be significant, particularly on busy long-distance routes such as London to Manchester or Edinburgh to London. On these routes, Advance tickets can be considerably cheaper than the equivalent Anytime fare, especially when booked well in advance.

On flexibility, Advance tickets are tied to a single train. Miss it, and you may need to buy a new ticket to travel on the next service, depending on the operator's policy. Anytime tickets are valid on any eligible train throughout the day, giving you the freedom to just turn up at the station and board whichever departure suits you.

On availability, Anytime tickets are on sale right up until your train departs. Advance tickets are limited in number, must be bought before the day of travel, and the cheapest allocations sell out first.

On refunds and changes, Anytime tickets are generally refundable, less any admin fee. Advance tickets are non-refundable, though some operators allow an exchange to a different departure if you request it before your original train leaves.

When should you choose Advance tickets?

Advance tickets make the most sense when your plans are fixed, and you're confident about your travel time. If you know exactly which train you want to catch and you're booking far enough in advance, an Advance ticket will almost always be the cheapest way to travel.

They work particularly well for budget-conscious travellers on longer routes, where the price difference between Advance and Anytime fares tends to be most pronounced. Booked weeks ahead, an Advance ticket from London to Edinburgh, for example, can cost a fraction of the walk-up Anytime price.

Advance fares also suit leisure travel when working to a set schedule, such as a concert, a sporting event, or a weekend away with a fixed itinerary. Also, for groups travelling together, the collective savings when booking Advance singles can be considerable.

If you're happy to commit to a specific train, Advance fares are almost always the smarter financial choice.

When are Anytime tickets worth it?

Anytime tickets, on the other hand, are worth paying extra for when flexibility genuinely matters or when your circumstances make them the most practical choice.

If you're travelling for work and you know your meetings might overrun or your schedule could change at short notice, an Anytime ticket gives you the freedom to catch the next available train without any penalty or extra cost. In fact, many business travellers use Anytime tickets precisely because the cost of being stranded often outweighs any savings from an Advance fare.

Anytime fares are also the right choice when you're booking on the day of travel and Advance fares are no longer available. So, if you need to get somewhere at short notice, an Anytime ticket at the station or through an app is most likely your best option.

For shorter journeys where the price gap between Advance and Anytime is relatively small, the extra flexibility can be worth the difference. On a route of an hour or less, it might be worth paying a little more for the freedom to take any train you want.

How to decide which ticket is best for you

When choosing between Advance and Anytime fares, the right ticket comes down to three questions – what's the purpose of your trip, how certain are your plans, and how much does the price matter?

If your travel time is fixed and you're booking ahead, go Advance. Book as early as you can to secure the lowest available fare, and treat your chosen train time as confirmed.

If your schedule is uncertain or you're booking on the day of travel, an Anytime ticket is the more practical choice. The higher cost means you don’t have to be tied to a specific service.

If neither quite fits, Off-Peak fares are also worth checking. They sit somewhere between Advance and Anytime in both price and flexibility, valid outside the busiest commuter hours and on most services at weekends, making them a useful middle ground for travellers who can be flexible about timing without having to commit to a specific train.

No matter which ticket type suits your journey best, you can compare fares with the cheapest available tickets shown alongside departure times, and book across all UK train operators on TrainPal.
