
Tate Modern by Train: Everything You Need to Know


The Tate Modern is a premier modern and contemporary art gallery in central London, opposite the Millennium Bridge, and next to Shakespeare’s Globe. An iconic building on the South Bank of the River Thames, the Tate Modern houses popular free collections, as well as groundbreaking exhibitions. Opened by Henry Tate in 1897, the gallery has expanded to showcase almost 70,000 artworks across four sites.

Getting to the Tate Modern by train
London Blackfriars has step-free access to all platforms, as well as accessible toilets and a seating area for passengers. The station also has refreshments, an ATM machine, and bicycle storage facilities. After arriving at London Blackfriars, you’ll be only 5 minutes from the Tate Modern. Walk along the Thames Path, then Holland Street, following signs to the Tate Modern.
Tate Modern tickets, opening hours and tips
Entry to the Tate Modern is free, though some exhibitions will require paid entrance. Costs vary, and concessionary rates are available for disabled visitors, children, and anyone aged 16–25. Most exhibitions allow guests to buy tickets on the day; however, it is a good idea to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Opening times for the Tate Modern are: Monday to Sunday 10.00–18.00 (last entry: 17.30).
Tip: Small bags can be brought into the Tate Modern (subject to security checks), but items larger than cabin bag size (55cm x 40cm x 20cm) will be refused entrance.
