Destinations on the Rise: Biggest, Fastest & Hidden Gems

Rail travel is on the rise, and as trains account for just under one third (29%) of long-distance travel, it’s important to understand which destinations are seeing a spike in footfall, and which places are still classed as “hidden gems” to the general public.
It’s also interesting to note that one-third of people expect to travel more via train in the next 12 months, increasing to between 40% and 49% across countries and cities, respectively, by 2030. Railways connect us all from the very tip of Scotland to the coasts in the south, and as rail travel grows more popular every year, it makes sense that some places are becoming hotspots of UK tourism. Take Margate, for example. This was once a serene spot where people came to find solace. But in 2023, this destination saw 4.1 million visitors.
In this guide, we utilise our internal booking data to discover which train destinations have risen in popularity over the past 2 to 5 years, while also highlighting lesser-known hotspots. We also uncover some of the best activities and sights to see in these destinations, and what type of travellers would be best suited for these hidden gems.

Methodology
Top Destinations: Please provide data on destinations in 2024/25/ (and 2026 if available) that have seen the biggest YoY growth in bookings, ideally including month-by-month data.
In the dataset, we include the following:
Booking volume
Year-on-year growth (%)
Month-on-month growth (%)
Percentage increases rather than hard numbers are preferred for YoY/MoM.
The ‘biggest rising’ ranking blends scale, YoY growth, and MoM momentum so the main story is backed by both size and growth.
The ‘fastest right-now' ranking ignores overall score and looks only at recent month-on-month movement to surface the quickest accelerators.
The hidden gem ranking isolates smaller but still credible destinations, so breakout places are not buried behind the biggest markets.
