Train travel to Exmouth Beach

Exmouth Beach delivers two miles of golden sand, sweeping views across the Jurassic Coast, and one of the most accessible beach escapes in the UK, all directly linked by train. This guide provides essential details for a flawless trip, including train routes, insider savings, station tips, and local secrets, ensuring your escape to Exmouth Beach is as effortless as it is unforgettable.

Exmouth Beach

Why visit Exmouth Beach by train?

Exmouth Beach is renowned for its cliffside sunsets, turquoise shallow water, and two miles of soft golden sand. Its location at the start of the Jurassic Coast, Britain’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, makes it ideal for scenic walks, fossil hunting, relaxing on the beach, or enjoying a swim.

Taking the train to Exmouth enhances the experience. You avoid the stress and cost of parking, reduce your carbon footprint, and enjoy one of the UK’s most scenic railway lines along the Exe Estuary, with peaceful views of shimmering estuaries and rolling countryside unfolding outside your window. Frequent, direct services from cities like Bristol and affordable connections from London and Cardiff make it one of the easiest coastal escapes by rail.

Planning your trip: Trains to Exmouth Beach

The closest train station to Exmouth Beach is Exmouth Station, located 0.5 miles from the shore. After arriving, it’s a 10-minute walk through the town centre. Once you exit the station, head down Rolle Street, continue straight onto The Strand, then follow signs leading to the Esplanade. Although there are currently no free beach shuttle services from the station, taxis are available outside the station building, and several bus services, including those operated by Stagecoach, connect to the beachfront in under five minutes.
The station sits at the end of the Avocet Line, a beautiful railway branch that follows the Exe Estuary and diverges from the West of England Main Line at Exeter Central. Exmouth Station is located 11.25 miles south of Exeter St Davids and is fully operated by Great Western Railway, who manage all services on the route.

Facilities at the station include a staffed ticket office, open Monday to Saturday from 07:10 to 15:25 but closed on Sundays. However, ticket machines are available for both purchases and online ticket collection. These machines are height-adjusted and wheelchair accessible.

There are also customer help points with induction loops, waiting rooms, seating areas, public telephones, and 76 spaces for secure cycle storage located on Platform 1 and adjacent to the station entrance. Step-free access is available throughout the station, although accessible toilets are currently unavailable. If you need assistance, staff are present Monday to Friday from 06:40 to 15:20, Saturday from 06:45 to 15:20, and Sunday from 09:10 to 15:20.

Train frequency varies by time of day. Peak services run more often, especially during commuter hours and summer weekends, while off-peak tickets offer a more relaxed and budget-friendly travel option. For real-time train information and bookings, visit the live departure and arrival board.

Saving on train tickets to Exmouth Beach

If you're keen to save money on your trip to Exmouth Beach, there are a number of strategies to consider. Start by booking early since tickets usually go on sale 12 weeks in advance, and platforms like TrainPal often offer the best fares. Railcards are a game-changer, too, with most cards knocking 33% off the cost of tickets. Children can also travel for just £1 with some family railcard deals.
If you're travelling with friends or family, group savings are available through GroupSave. Comparing ticket types, such as Advance (the cheapest but with fixed times), Off-Peak (flexible and cheaper), and Anytime (the most expensive but fully flexible), can also be helpful. Split ticketing, where you divide your journey into sections with separate tickets, can significantly reduce fares, especially for longer trips. These tips apply year-round but are especially useful during summer when Exmouth is at its busiest.

At Exmouth Beach: Essentials & tips

Exmouth Beach is well-equipped with everything you need for a comfortable day by the sea. Public toilets are available along the promenade, and RNLI lifeguards are present during the summer in clearly marked zones. Dogs are welcome in designated areas year-round. Beachside kiosks offer rentals of paddleboards, kayaks, and deckchairs, and there are numerous nearby cafes, pubs, and shops within walking distance.

Check tides and weather ahead of your visit using the Met Office and tide forecasts to plan your water activities. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, towels, swimwear, and a reusable water bottle.

To avoid crowds, plan your trip mid-week or aim to arrive early in the day. Should the weather turn, Exmouth has several indoor attractions, including the World of Country Life and the Exmouth Indoor Market.
