Travelling with pets on UK trains: Rules & costs

Yes, pets are allowed on UK trains, but travelling with an animal comes with conditions designed to protect passengers, staff and the pet itself. The National Rail Conditions of Travel provide a general framework, but individual train operators can apply additional rules around the number of animals, carriers, seating and specific services. It is therefore important to check the conditions for the train you plan to use before travelling.

Quick checklist for travelling with a pet

• Keep dogs under control and on a suitable lead

• Keep cats and other small animals in a secure carrier

• Keep pets and carriers off passenger seats and tables

• Keep animals clear of aisles, doorways and other areas where they could obstruct movement

• Prevent mess and maintain good hygiene throughout the journey

• Follow any instructions given by train staff

Dogs, cats and other small domestic animals can travel by train, provided they remain under control. Other animals may be subject to different restrictions, and operators do not necessarily have identical policies.

Owners are responsible for their pets throughout the journey. An animal that becomes distressed, aggressive, or disruptive, or that creates a hygiene or safety problem, can cause difficulties for everyone on board. Staff may therefore require an owner to move, restrain or otherwise manage the animal.

Assistance and guide dogs are subject to different provisions than ordinary pets and may have broader access rights. If an animal creates a serious safety, hygiene or passenger-comfort issue, staff may intervene and, depending on the circumstances, refuse travel or require the owner and pet to leave the service.

Yes, you can take dogs on UK trains, and up to two domestic dogs can travel free of charge on standard services, provided you follow the relevant rules. The key requirement is to keep your dog under control throughout the journey and ensure it does not interfere with other passengers.

Small dogs that can comfortably travel in a suitable carrier should remain securely contained. An escape-proof carrier can be useful for nervous or very small dogs, while larger dogs will travel alongside their owners on a short lead. Whatever the arrangement, dogs must not occupy passenger seats or tables. They should remain safely on the floor without blocking aisles, doorways or other passenger areas.

Your dog's size and temperament are also important considerations. A large dog needs enough floor space to settle without obstructing others, while a highly reactive or excitable dog may find a crowded carriage difficult.

Yes, dogs can travel on UK trains during peak times, but passengers should not assume that all operators have identical rules. The conditions of carriage can vary between services, so it is important to check the specific operator before travelling. In some cases, additional restrictions may apply, especially on certain networks or services. Separate provisions may also cover assistance dogs.

Even where peak-time travel is permitted, a crowded train can make the journey more difficult. Your dog must remain under control, stay off passenger seats and avoid obstructing aisles, doorways or other areas used by passengers. On a packed commuter service, finding enough floor space for a larger dog can be challenging, while noise, crowds and sudden movement may cause an otherwise calm animal to become unsettled.

If you have flexibility, travelling outside the busiest periods is more practical. Mid-morning, early afternoon, or late evening services may offer more space and a calmer environment. Before setting off, check the operator's current pet policy and, where available, the passenger capacity information for your chosen service. If a train is already extremely crowded, waiting for a quieter service can make boarding safer and more comfortable for everyone.

For most standard UK train journeys, ordinary pets do not need a separate ticket. Under the general National Rail conditions, passengers can take up to two domestic pets free of charge, although individual operators can apply additional conditions.

If you are travelling with more than two pets, an extra fare may apply. For example, sleeper trains may require a pet-related fee even when no conventional pet ticket is needed. International services have their own rules, so check the operator's rules before departure.

Special services can also have separate charges. For example, sleeper trains may require a pet-related fee even when no conventional pet ticket is needed. International services have their own rules as well, and ordinary pets may not be permitted at all.

Assistance and guide dogs are treated differently from ordinary pets. They travel free of charge and are subject to separate access provisions. If you are travelling with an assistance animal, check the requirements for your particular operator and service before travelling.

Assistance dogs should not be treated as ordinary pets when travelling by train. They are there to support disabled passengers and can be covered by different accessibility arrangements from those that apply to companion animals. The Equality Act 2010 is relevant to the provision of services to disabled people, while individual train operators set out practical arrangements for travelling with assistance dogs.

Assistance dogs can travel free of charge, without being subject to the standard limit applied to ordinary pets. They may also have access to areas where ordinary pets are restricted, depending on the operator and service. Passengers should check the current arrangements with their train operator, especially when travelling on sleeper or international services, because rules can differ.

It is also important not to assume that every animal described as a therapy or emotional-support animal has the same status as an assistance dog. Legal protections and railway arrangements can depend on the animal's role and the passenger's circumstances.

If you are travelling with an assistance dog, check the operator's accessibility guidance before departure and contact its assistance service if you need help with boarding, seating or making space for the dog.

A little preparation can make travelling by train much easier for both you and your pet. Before setting off, check the current conditions of the train operator you are using, as requirements can vary between services.

• Choose a quieter service where possible: Travelling outside the busiest periods can give your pet more space and reduce exposure to crowds and noise.
• Arrive at the station early: Extra time allows you to find the right platform without rushing and gives your pet a chance to settle before boarding.
• Keep your pet secure: Dogs should remain under control on a suitable lead, while smaller animals should be kept in an appropriate secure carrier.
• Pack water and familiar items: A spill-proof bowl, water and a familiar blanket can help your pet remain comfortable during the journey.
• Keep pets off seats and out of the way: Your animal should remain on the floor without blocking aisles, doorways or other passengers' space.
• Plan for longer journeys: Consider your pet's needs before travelling, especially if the trip involves connections or extended periods on board. Avoid feeding a large meal immediately before departure if your pet is prone to travel sickness.
• Keep the carriage clean: Bring supplies to deal with accidents promptly and dispose of waste appropriately.
