It’s a common scenario: you know when your train is due to arrive, but you don’t know where it currently is or if it’s running on time. With no updates at the station, you end up asking yourself, “what platform is my train arriving at?” Understanding how train times work in the UK goes beyond decoding the station departure boards. Each operator has their own timetable and Off-Peak travel restrictions. You can track live departures and arrivals, as well as the route status. In fact, you’ll often get notified before there are any platform/journey announcements at the station.

How to check UK train times

You can find train times from a variety of sources before you travel, including online journey planners, booking platforms, the operator’s official website or in person at the station. We recommend checking closer to the departure date for the most up-to-date version, as local alterations to the line, staff availability and engineering works can lead to timetable adjustments in the weeks before you travel.

Each operator runs its trains to a set timetable, published 12 weeks in advance. However, platform information and the exact departure time is usually confirmed relatively close to departure. On top of that, it’s likely to change on the day if delays or other factors affect the service. So rather than relying solely on the time given on your ticket, booking confirmation or an old timetable, passengers should check the station departure boards and live train times. Listen out for any announcements in case your train changes platforms.

How do live train times work?

Live train times show real-time information on when the train will leave and arrive at stations on the route. Unlike scheduled timetables that have been pre-planned, live departures and arrivals also combine tracking data from control centres, as well as GPS, signalling and passenger information systems. The live movements picked up by the sensors, tracking network and dispatchers are collected and compared to the planned timetable. As a result, the estimated arrival and departure times at upcoming calling points are recalculated based on the train’s current location as opposed to where it’s expected to be. Live information can change multiple times in the lead-up to the service starting and throughout the journey - especially if there is disruption.

Checking real-time information is particularly useful before your train is scheduled to arrive so you can adjust your plans in case there are delays or cancellations. You can also rely on live train times while you’re on board to get a better idea of when you’ll get to your destination.

What are Off-Peak train times?

Off-Peak train times are during quieter travel periods: outside of morning and evening rush hours during the week and all day over the weekend and on bank holidays. When you purchase train tickets, they have varying restrictions, with some only being valid on a limited number of trains at specific times or on specified days and routes. An Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak ticket only permits travel not falling into busy peak hours.

There isn’t a universal Off-Peak period across train services in the UK. The validity of your ticket depends on the operator and the exact restriction code that applies to your fare. In some cases, specific restrictions are in place for trains heading to/from London. As a general rule of thumb, Off-Peak train times start from 09:30 in cities and large towns from Monday to Friday and begin at 09:00 everywhere else. Off-Peak travel typically continues until around 16:00 then continues from 19:00 after the evening rush hour. Check the conditions attached to your ticket to know exactly when you can travel and which route and services you’re allowed to take.

How do you find your train platform?

There’ll either be a departure board not too far away from the station entrance, or you may find a large screen with services, train times and platform numbers in the main concourse if you’re at a larger station. Each platform has its own screen to show upcoming services. If you’re tracking the train on your device, you should find details on which platform to go to shortly before departure. Remember that the platform information is subject to change, so you should always keep an eye on the departure board rather than assuming the platform is fixed. Station announcements will also notify passengers which platform to go to. Check the signs around the station to get an idea of the platform layout.

What should you do if your platform changes?

There may be late changes to the platform your train is departing from. Listen out for any announcements and take a look at the departure boards in the station concourse or information screens on the platform you’re currently on to confirm the new location. Be sure to give yourself enough time to get to the right platform, especially if you’re at a busy or large station. To ensure everyone’s safety, you should avoid running along the platforms, subways, overbridges or on stairs. Speak to station staff if you require Passenger Assist services to help you get to the new platform or need extra time to switch platforms yourself. They should be able to hold the train until you’re on board.

Should you miss your train due to a last-minute platform change, contact the operator. You could be authorised to board the next train with your Advance ticket or compensated via the Delay Repay scheme.

How early should you arrive at the station?

Your arrival time will depend on the station size, how busy the concourse is, and your walking speed and mobility. Navigating a smaller local station they you’re pretty familiar with will take much less time than moving through a busy city terminus for the first time. It’s best to arrive at least ten minutes before when taking the train from a small station with a couple of platforms that aren’t tricky to find. Add on a few more minutes if you’re carrying bulky luggage. At larger stations and terminals, aim to get there about 20 minutes before your train leaves to familiarise yourself with the platform layout, navigate crowds and check the departure boards. The platform for your train will be announced around 10–15 minutes ahead of departure, and you’ll need to be on board at least two minutes before the scheduled time.
