How to read UK train departure boards?

A train departure board is the screen that tells you which trains are due to leave a station and at what time. At UK train stations, you will find large electronic screens in the main concourse, mostly near the entrance, ticket gates or waiting areas, with additional displays on individual platforms. Smaller screens may provide information closer to the platforms, while announcements give passengers important updates over the station's public address system.

The information is not fixed: departure times, platforms and service statuses can change while you are at the station, especially when there are delays or cancellations. Instead of trying to understand the entire timetable, focus on the details shown for your particular service. Check the departure time, destination, calling points, platform and status, and keep confirming the latest information before you board.

Each part answers a different question: when does it leave, where is it going, where does it stop, who operates it, where do I board and is anything changing? The additional message may then provide instructions specific to that service.

Departure time

The departure time tells you when the train is scheduled to leave the station. Departure boards list services by time, making this a useful starting point when looking for your train. UK railway displays use the 24-hour clock, so 14:15 means 2:15 pm. In our example, find the 14:15 service first, then check the other details; don’t assume that the first train at a convenient time is the right one.

Destination

Calling points

Calling points are the stations where the train is scheduled to stop along its route. They may appear underneath the destination or in a separate part of the listing, sometimes as scrolling text.

In our example, the service calls at York, Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed. If you are travelling to York, its appearance in the calling points confirms that the Edinburgh-bound train is scheduled to stop there. Always check this section when your station is an intermediate stop.

Operator

The operator is the railway company running the particular service. It may appear alongside the calling points or elsewhere within the service listing. In our example, LNER operates the 14:15 train to Edinburgh Waverley.

This can matter when your ticket has restrictions relating to the operator or service. Check the conditions of your ticket and avoid assuming that any train serving the same route is valid. The operator can also help distinguish between services with similar destinations.

Platform

The platform tells you where the train will depart from. In the example, "Plat 4" means the service is due to leave from platform 4. Platform information is not always displayed immediately, particularly at larger stations, so you may need to wait for it to be announced.

Once a platform number appears, check it carefully and follow the station signs. Do not rely on information you saw earlier if the board subsequently shows a different platform.

Train status

The train status shows if the service is operating as scheduled or whether there has been a change. "On time" means the service is currently expected to depart according to its timetable.

A message such as "Exp 14:22" indicates a revised expected departure time, while "Delayed" means the service is running late without a specific revised time being shown. "Cancelled" means the service will not operate. Always check the latest status before heading to the platform.

Additional messages

Additional messages provide information that does not fit neatly into the main departure fields but may affect how you board or use the service. For example, a message might say that only the front five coaches are available for passengers travelling to a particular station. In that situation, passengers for that station need to board the specified coaches.

Other messages may contain information about changes, restrictions or service arrangements.

If your platform changes at the last minute, check the new number on the departure board and listen carefully for the station announcement. Once you have confirmed the change, follow the official signs and arrows for the new platform and avoid following other passengers who may also be trying to find their way.

At large UK stations, reaching another platform may involve a considerable walk, stairs, escalators, lifts or an underpass, so allow enough time to get there, especially if you have luggage or mobility requirements. Do not run through the station, even if the train is due to leave soon.

When you reach the new platform, check the display again to make sure you are waiting for the correct service. If you are unsure where to go or cannot reach the platform easily, ask a member of station staff for assistance.

Station departure boards and live train information provide similar updates, but they are most useful at different stages of your journey. Before leaving for the station, a train operator's website, app or journey-planning service can provide you with live train information to help check whether your service is running, delayed or affected by disruption.

Once you arrive, the station departure board becomes important because it provides information relevant to your immediate departure, including the platform and any last-minute changes.

Both sources can update as circumstances change, so the information may change between checking your phone and reaching the station. Once you are at the station, keep checking the departure board and listening to announcements for the latest platform and service information.

What is a train departure board?

A train departure board is a display showing information about services due to leave a station. At UK stations, you will find large electronic boards in the main concourse, with smaller screens on platforms and around the station.

How do I read a train departure board?

Start by finding your scheduled departure time, then check the destination to identify the service. Next, look at the "calling at" information to confirm that your station is included. Check the operator if your ticket has restrictions, then find the platform number and current status.

What does "due" mean on a train departure board?

"Due" means the train is scheduled to arrive or depart at that time. On a departure board, a service marked "Due" is normally at or very close to its scheduled departure time. It does not necessarily mean the train has already left.

What does "expected" mean on a train departure board?

"Expected" means the train is expected to arrive or depart at a revised time. It is shortened to "Exp" on departure boards. For example, "Exp 14:22" indicates that the service is now expected at 14:22 instead of its original scheduled time.

How do I find my train platform?

Find your train on the main departure board and look for the platform or "Plat" field alongside its details. The number tells you where the service will depart. At some stations, the platform may not be displayed until closer to departure. Follow the signs and arrows directing you to that platform.

Can a train platform change?

Yes, a train's platform can change, sometimes shortly before departure. If the number changes on the departure board, confirm the new platform and listen to the station announcement.

What does "calling at" mean on a train?

"Calling at" refers to the stations where the train is scheduled to stop during its journey. The main destination shown on the departure board is the train's advertised final destination, so your station may appear only in the "calling at" list.

What does "cancelled" mean on a departure board?

"Cancelled" means the scheduled train will not operate. If your service is cancelled, check the departure board for other services and speak to station staff if you are unsure which alternative you can use.
