On the way, enjoy the sights of the capital as you speed out of the city through South East London. Watch the bustle being replaced by greenery as you enter leafy Kent. Known as the famous 'Garden of England', there's plenty to look at as you travel towards the Kentish coast, with the seaside visible on your left coming into Margate Station.

Southeastern runs trains on lines heading South and East from London. They serve mainly Kent, calling at major destinations such as Sevenoaks, Maidstone, Dartford, Gravesend, Rochester, Canterbury, Folkestone and Dover. In addition to Kent, there are services heading into East Sussex, visiting places like Hastings. Southeastern also runs trains on High Speed 1, a route which travels from London St Pancras International to Ashford International for Eurostar services, but which also cuts journey times on several linked routes into London.

Departing from London Victoria

To travel from London Victoria to Margate, you'll start at Victoria Station. The main entrance is on Terminus Place, just off Buckingham Palace Road. This major railway destination has its own London Underground station, served by the Circle, District and Victoria lines. There are several bus stops immediately outside the station and in the streets nearby, which allow onward connections from across the capital. The iconic Victoria Coach Station is just down the road from the train station, offering road connections from almost anywhere in Britain.

The station is served by trains from Southeastern, Southern and Gatwick Express. Services travel to destinations such as Orpington, Gillingham, Faversham, Dartford, Ashford International, Dover Priory, Ramsgate, Epsom Downs, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Eastbourne. The Gatwick Express runs from here to Gatwick Airport and on to Brighton. Other services run to many more destinations within Greater London.

Main stops

These trains often stop at Bromley South, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham (Kent), Rainham (Kent), Sittingbourne, Faversham, Whitstable, Chestfield & Swalecliffe, Herne Bay, Birchington, and Westgate on Sea.

Some slower trains also call at Longfield, Meopham, Newington and Teynham.

Arriving at Margate

The easy London Victoria to Margate train gets you to the beachside Margate Station quickly and comfortably. In fact, you can literally see the beach from the station entrance, which is located on Station Road, just off Canterbury Road. To catch buses, you can use one of the three bus stops just outside the station. And you'll also find the taxi rank at the station entrance. In addition to this, there are further bus stops in the town centre.

As well as Victoria-bound services, trains to the capital also run to London St Pancras via Chatham and Gravesend, or Ramsgate and Canterbury West. In addition, there is provision for direct travel to London Bridge and London Cannon Street during peak hours.

If you're a fan of art, then Margate could surprise you. Turner Contemporary is simply a must-visit art gallery, named after JMW Turner, who went to school in the town. After you have recovered from all that culture, wander along the seafront. For some exciting fairground fun, Dreamland Margate, on Hall by the Sea Road, offers a big wheel, several rollercoasters and regular concerts with big-name artists. Once you've had enough excitement, grab some food at one of Margate's many fine restaurants - there are plenty both in town and on the seafront.

• Standard Class: Book in advance and get yourself a reserved seat on the London Victoria to Margate train. You'll also get free Wi-Fi, which now even works in some tunnels!
• First Class: It isn't possible to travel from London Victoria to Margate First Class with Southeastern.

• Luggage: There are luggage racks and overhead shelves available on each train. Smaller bags can be kept on your lap, of course.
• Bicycles: Bikes aren't allowed on peak time trains between London and Gillingham, Otford, Hayes, Tonbridge, Ashford (on High Speed services) unless they are folding bikes. If your train is off-peak, though, all cycles are welcome.
• Children: A buggy can occupy a wheelchair space if no one is using it, but you must vacate it if someone needs to use it as a wheelchair space. If you need to fold it, it can be stowed as luggage. Under 5s can travel for free but aren't entitled to a seat. Kids from 5 to 15 get half-price tickets!
• Pets: You can bring a maximum of two domestic animals for free. Any more are subject to extra charges. Pets must be kept in a carrier, though dogs can be kept on a lead. They mustn't cause a nuisance.
• Passenger Assist: You can ask for Passenger Assist to help you navigate trains or stations whenever you need it. It's best to book it via phone or online two hours in advance, though.
