Intercity and regional trains

Intercity trains and regional trains are two types of train services provided by Trenitalia. Intercity trains are for longer-distance travel between major cities, offering more comfort and amenities. They have fewer stops and higher speeds, making them quicker for inter-regional travel.

Regional trains are for shorter distances within a region or neighbouring towns. They have more stops and operate at a slower pace, allowing passengers to explore local areas. They are popular among commuters and budget-conscious travellers.

The Intercity train is the most affordable and widespread means of rail transport, with 102 connections every day. Whether you want to travel to seaside towns or destinations nestled in the mountains or Italy’s famous cities of art, Intercity will take you there.

Intercity trains have two classes – First and Second – both of which offer seats, power sockets, reading lights and reserved wheelchair spaces for disabled passengers.

There are also Intercity night trains, called “Intercity Notte”, with 24 daily connections from the north to the south of Italy, where you can sleep in bed cabins to save on the cost of a hotel. Bed cabins come with air-conditioning, a washbasin, complimentary toiletries and much more.

Regional trains

Regional trains

Although high-speed trains such as Italo and le 'Frecce' are typically the most convenient mode of transportation for travelling within Italy, they do not provide service to all Italian cities. As a result, Trenitalia's regional trains (known as Treni Regionali in Italian) are utilised to access smaller towns and destinations, despite their older and slower nature. Regional trains offer a more laid-back travel experience and are also a cost-effective option for those travelling on a budget.
