A broken rail between Imperial Wharf and Clapham Junction means all lines are disrupted.
Period:Saturday, May 9 to Saturday, May 9
Operators:London Overground,Southern
Related Information:A broken rail between Imperial Wharf and Clapham Junction means all lines are disrupted. As a result, trains between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction / Wembley Central may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.
Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
A visual disruption map video is available.
London Overground customer advice: A reduced service will run between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction. Trains that aren't running between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction will start at / terminate at Shepherds Bush or be diverted to Richmond.
Southern customer advice: There is a broken rail on a bridge between Imperial Wharf and Clapham Junction. Southern services will be unable to run on the "West London Line" route between Watford Junction and East Croydon until further notice today. If you were planning to travel on this route, you will need to use alternative services across the area. This will take at least 30-45 minutes longer than usual. A reduced London Overground service will be able to run on the Mildmay line, using the other track over the bridge to avoid the issue. Other Southern services between Clapham Junction and East Croydon will run normally, but Southern expect these to be busier than usual.
You can use your ticket at no extra cost on:
London Underground services on any reasonable route across Central, North and West London
Alternative Southern services connecting with the London Underground at London Victoria
London Overground services:
where available, on the Mildmay line between Clapham Junction, Shepherds Bush and Willesden Junction
on the Lioness line between Watford Junction, Harrow & Wealdstone, Wembley Central, Willesden Junction and Euston
London Northwestern Railway services between Watford Junction, Harrow & Wealdstone and London Euston
London Buses serving stations between Watford Junction, Shepherds Bush and Clapham Junction
Chiltern Railways between Wembley Stadium and London Marylebone (Wembley Stadium is around 10-15 minutes distance from Wembley Central)
Additionally, Southern services between London Victoria and Reigate will stop additionally at Selhurst in both directions today. These trains will provide additional options for you to travel between Selhurst and East Croydon, but please be aware they are generally only formed of 4 coaches, and can be very busy.
Stations which cannot be served by Southern: The following stations cannot be served by Southern as a result of this:
Watford Junction (served by London Northwestern Railway and London Overground on the Lioness line)
Harrow & Wealdstone (served by London Northwestern Railway, the Bakerloo line, and London Overground on the Lioness line)
Wembley Central (served by the Bakerloo line, and London Overground on the Lioness line)
Shepherds Bush (served by the Central line, and London Overground on the Mildmay line)
Kensington Olympia (served by some District line services, and London Overground on the Mildmay line)
West Brompton (served by some District line services, and London Overground on the Mildmay line)
Imperial Wharf (served by London Overground on the Mildmay line)
Planning your journey: Live departure boards and a live map of the network can be used to help plan your journey. You can see the alternative route guide. In the London area, you can plan journeys on alternative routes by using the TfL Journey Planner. You can also use Southern's app to find up-to-date information.
Can you tell me more about the incident? During routine overnight safety inspections, at around 03:00, a Network Rail team discovered a broken expansion joint on the track over the railway's Chelsea River Bridge. This expansion joint is an integral part of the track, which allows the metalwork to expand and contract at different temperatures. There are usually several different options to secure broken rails and allow trains to continue running. However, these are not suitable in this case, partly because an expansion joint is a more intricate part of the track. This means that Network Rail engineers will need to attend during the day, assess the issue and if possible undertake repairs. It is not known exactly how long this procedure will take. As a result, unfortunately Southern are advising that they cannot run on this part of the route until further notice. It is advised that you use a different route or alternative trains in the area. London Overground will be able to run a limited service over the bridge, using the other line, which is unaffected by the expansion joint problem. The route is equipped with signals which let trains use this line alternately in both directions, so this is possible to an extent. Unfortunately, there is no capacity to run Southern services as well, also because many freight trains are also diverted onto the same line today.
Check before you travel: You can check your journey using the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner.
Compensation: You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.
