  • Getting to the station by bus: Routes 1, 10, 11, 12, 22, 31 and X45 stop at the Central Stn Neville St stop right outside the main entrance. The station is on the Yellow and Green lines of the Metro.
  • Inside the station: There’s step-free access to all platforms, with staff available to deploy ramps. You’ll find toilets on platforms 3, 4 and 12, a Changing Places toilet on platform 12, accessible toilets on 3 and 4, baby changing, free Wi-Fi, and shops and refreshments on the concourse.
  • Passenger Assistance Lounge: On platform 12, open Mon–Sat 07:00–18:00 and Sun 09:00–17:00.
  • Parking: The Long Stay car park has 454 spaces (17 accessible), with off-peak weekday rates from £8.00 (after 10:00) and a daily rate of £20.00. The Short Stay car park has 27 spaces with the first 20 minutes free, with the entrance on the west side.
  • Bikes: There are 116 sheltered bike spaces with CCTV — split between platform 12 at the south end and the Station Management Centre at the north end.
  • Pets: If your dog needs a walk before the journey, Leazes Park is about 10–12 minutes on foot north from the Neville Street entrance via St Thomas Street.
  • Luggage storage: Newcastle station doesn’t have an official left-luggage office. Third-party providers in the city centre operate near the station and can be booked online before you travel.

Northern trains reach speeds of up to 100 mph on the Durham Coast Line. Most services call at Heworth, Sunderland, Seaham, Horden, Hartlepool, Seaton Carew, Billingham, Stockton and Thornaby before Middlesbrough. There are some express services that only stop at Sunderland, Hartlepool and Thornaby.
  • Best side for views: On all-stops services between Seaham and Horden, sit on the left-hand side facing forward for views of the North Sea and the limestone cliffs of the Durham Heritage Coast.
  • The “you’re nearly there” cue: After Thornaby, the train crosses the River Tees on the final approach to Middlesbrough.

Trains from Newcastle arrive at Middlesbrough platform 2. There are lifts to both platforms and step-free access from both street-level exits.

  • The Zetland Road exit (main entrance): Faces north towards the town centre. Use this for Captain Cook Square, the Cleveland Centre and Middlesbrough Town Hall (about 10 minutes on foot). Teesside University is roughly 10 minutes on foot from the same exit.
  • The Bridge Street West exit (rear of station): The taxi rank is right outside. Step-free with ramp access from the car park, so use this exit if you have luggage.
  • Onward buses: Middlesbrough Bus Station on Newport Road is about 5 to 10 minutes on foot via Exchange Place.
  • Onward rail: From Middlesbrough you can change for the Esk Valley Line to Whitby, via James Cook, Nunthorpe, Grosmont and Sleights. The Tees Valley Line runs east to Redcar Central and Saltburn.
  • Station facilities: There are toilets, baby changing and an accessible toilet on the concourse, plus free Wi-Fi, a shop and a café. There’s no Changing Places toilet at Middlesbrough.
  • Pets: For dog walks after the journey, Albert Park is about 15–20 minutes on foot south from the Zetland Road entrance via Albert Road and Linthorpe Road.
