Great Western Railway trains from Bristol to London

By Enrico Belcore | Updated March 25, 2026

Great Western Railway has become the main operator serving the line Bristol-London, since South Western Railway discontinued its service a few years back. The train departs from Bristol Temple Meads and stops at the stations of Bath Spa, Swindon (Wilts), Didcot Parkway, and Reading, among others.

First Class vs Standard — what to choose?

  • Standard Class includes free Wi-Fi, power sockets and access to the onboard café. From snacks and sweet treats to sandwiches and wraps, plus soft drinks, beers and wines.
  • First Class offers wider seats with extra legroom, tables with plug sockets and USB ports at your seat. A complimentary at-seat trolley service is also included, with drinks and snacks served directly to you. You can also relax before departure in a dedicated First Class lounge. Access to Pullman Dining — a private table on GWR's luxury onboard restaurant (reservation needed)

What is the luggage allowance?

Small bags can be kept under your seat, medium-sized cases go in the overhead racks, and larger items up to 25 x 40 x 70cm should be stored in the dedicated luggage areas. GWR does not permit more than 3 pieces of luggage, or anything larger than 30 x 70 x 90cm.

Is GWR First Class worth it?

Considering it is a 1h  journey, First Class is not an essential upgrade, but still a nice-to-have if you’d like some extra comfort. The wider seats and extra legroom make a real difference if you're working on a laptop. In addition, for a special trip, the Pullman Dining car is hard to beat anywhere in the UK.

Train travel from Bristol to London

Reach London in just 90 minutes from Bristol, heading east through the beautiful Somerset and Wiltshire countryside on Great Western Railway's flagship route.

Bristol Temple Meads: Getting to the Platform

Bristol Temple Meads was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1840 — one of the most beautiful stations in Britain. GWR services to London Paddington depart from the mainline platforms (check the departure boards as there’s no set platform for the line). You can easily reach the station from Bristol city centre, on bus 9 and 8, departing from College Green or The Centre, or metrobus m2 connecting Long Ashton Park & Ride to the city centre.

What is the station layout?

Bristol Temple Meads is currently undergoing a major transformation as part of the Temple Quarter regeneration programme, with new Northern, Southern and Eastern entrances being created. Lifts to all platforms and facilities are available, and the ticket office is fully step-free.

Onboard trains from Bristol to London

The route heads east through the stunning Somerset and Wiltshire countryside, passing through Swindon and Reading before arriving at London Paddington.

  • The scenic side: Shortly after leaving Bristol, the train passes through the rolling Somerset countryside and along the edge of the Thames Valley. Seat on the RIGHT-hand side (facing east/London) to not miss the view over Windsor Castle and Uffington White Horse.
  • Key landmarks: Keep your camera ready around 45 minutes into the journey — on a clear day you can spot the white chalk figure of the Uffington White Horse carved into the hillside near Swindon, one of Britain's oldest landmarks dating back over 3,000 years.

Arriving at London Paddington

London Paddington today welcomes an estimated 60,000 passengers every day. The station is also famous for its connection to the beloved Paddington Bear children's book series.

The correct exit

  • Praed Street Exit (Main Exit): The main entrance and exit on Praed Street is your most direct route to street level, taxis and buses.
  • Eastbourne Terrace Exit: A quieter exit on the north side of the station, useful for pre-booked taxis and drop-off points.
  • Taxi Deck: The taxi rank is situated above Platform 12, accessed via escalators and lifts from the concourse — with a covered marshalled rank and separate collection point for pre-booked cabs.

Onward Travel

  • The Underground is directly accessible within the station, serving the Bakerloo, District, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, plus the Elizabeth line for fast connections across London.
  • The Heathrow Express also departs from Paddington, reaching Heathrow Airport in just 15 minutes.

Walkability

Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Regent's Canal are all within easy walking distance of Paddington.
