Trains to Selhurst Park: A Comprehensive Guide
Selhurst Park is the home of Crystal Palace Football Club. The stadium itself was opened in 1924, making it a historic stadium that’s still living and breathing football to this day. It’s known for its incredible atmosphere and passionate supporters. While it is primarily used as a football ground for Crystal Palace FC, the stadium has hosted other football-related events in the past, such as hosting international football matches and football events during the 1948 Summer Olympics, which were held in London.

The stadium is easy to reach by train, especially if you’re travelling to the stadium from London. Selhurst and Thornton Heath are the stadium’s closest stations, offering excellent connections from many mainline stations in Central London.

In this article, we’ll provide more information about the stadium, including how to get there, and offer some helpful travel tips.

Selhurst Park

About Selhurst Park: the essentials

Selhurst Park is located on Holmesdale Road in Croydon, Greater London. As the station was built in 1924, its architectural design and the atmosphere of the stadium retain a traditional feel, with the terraces situated in close proximity to the pitch, creating an intense matchday experience. It is also one of London’s oldest professional football stadiums still in use, with a capacity of almost 26,000 supporters.

Getting to Selhurst Park by Train

The best way to get to Selhurst Park is by getting off at either Selhurst Station or Thornton Heath Station, which are conveniently close to the stadium. The main train operators for both stations are Southern. It’s only about a ten-minute walk from Selhurst Station, or a fifteen-minute walk from Thornton Heath Station.
If you’re travelling in from further afield, then you might be better off travelling to London Victoria or London Bridge first and then changing trains for Thornton Heath or Selhurst. Here are some popular routes to the station:
1: London Victoria to Selhurst

It takes around twenty-eight minutes to get from London Victoria to Selhurst with Southern.

2: London Bridge to Selhurst

The journey from London Bridge to Selhurst takes, on average, thirty-seven minutes with Southern.

3: Clapham Junction to Thornton Heath

Typically, it usually takes around sixteen minutes to get from Clapham Junction to Thornton Heath with Southern. Trains leave every few minutes.

4: London Bridge to Thornton Heath

Getting from London Bridge to Thornton Heath usually takes around thirty-four minutes with Southern.

What to do at Selhurst Park?

Selhurst Park offers a fantastic opportunity for Crystal Palace supporters, young and old, to see the stadium for themselves. You’ll go pitch side, seeing how your favourite football players see the pitch on match day. You’ll also see the media operations hub, the tunnel leading to the pitch, and much more.

There’s also the Crystal Palace FC club shop to visit for all your favourite replica kits, new merchandise, toys, fashion, and souvenirs.

For some post- or pre-match refreshments, head to BOXPARK Croydon to enjoy a drink or sample some delicious food from around the globe.

Travel tips for visiting Selhurst Park

If the lure of Selhurst Park is too strong, remember to follow some simple travel tips to help you get there with a minimum amount of fuss.

It’s always a great idea to book your train tickets early; not only does this often secure the cheapest fares, but it also allows you to pick your preferred seat well in advance, making for a more comfortable journey. Booking tickets early also helps you familiarise yourself with the route you need to take to reach the stadium, keeping the chances of getting lost to a minimum.

For the savvy traveller, consider going off-peak. This means fewer crowds and usually a lower ticket price. If you own a Railcard, remember to apply it for an extra discount when you book your tickets.

To really make the most of your trip and enjoy your matchday experience without feeling rushed or swamped by crowds at the last minute, try to arrive at the stadium one to two hours before kick-off.

Conclusion

This guide for reaching Selhurst Park by train provides crucial insights to guarantee a smooth and budget-friendly trip. By outlining the best travel routes, ticketing advice, and timing strategies, it enables you to plan your journey effectively, avoiding typical travel issues. Whether you're attending a thrilling football game or another event, having a solid travel plan improves your overall experience. This guide aids in cost savings and minimizes travel stress, letting you concentrate on enjoying the vibrant atmosphere at Selhurst Park.
