It only takes one hour to reach the magnificent city of York. CrossCountry provides trains up to twice an hour, with the quickest taking 45 minutes. Take in riverside views as the train passes the banks of the River Don and scenic countryside.

Departing from Sheffield

Start your journey at Sheffield station, the busiest station in South Yorkshire. This central hub is exceptionally easy to reach, with Supertram lines conveniently running adjacent to the station and numerous local bus routes stopping right in front of the building - providing seamless connections from across the city.

In addition to services from Sheffield to York, trains offer direct connections to Barnsley, Norwich, Aberdeen, and other towns and cities. CrossCountry, Northern, East Midlands Railway (EMR) and TransPennine Express are the current operators.

Main stops                                       

Calling points vary based on the operator, route and time. CrossCountry services may stop at Doncaster, Wakefield Westgate or Leeds. Stops on Northern trains include Rotherham Central, Moorthorpe and Church Fenton.

Arriving at York

Trains from Sheffield arrive at a convenient location - York station is only a 15-minute walk from the centre of this Viking city. A closer attraction is the National Railway Museum, a fun museum for all ages with free entry. Satisfy your culinary cravings at the Shambles Food Court and discover the renowned medieval shopping street.

York station has many transport links, including local buses and cabs in front of the station. Other than the Sheffield to York train, services run to/from stations like Manchester Airport, Inverness, Bristol and London. Trains are operated by CrossCountry, Northern, Grand Central, London North Eastern Railway (LNER) and TransPennine Express.

CrossCountry train classes

• Standard Class: CrossCountry provides free Wi-Fi access in all Standard Class coaches. There are also dedicated luggage racks, plus hot and cold drinks and light snacks to buy on most services between 06:00 and 20:00. You can easily buy cheap train tickets when you book in advance.
• First Class: Sheffield to York First Class perks include quieter carriages, complimentary refreshments served at your seat, larger reclining seats and extra table space.

CrossCountry train travel advice

• Luggage: Each passenger can take a small bag, one medium-sized bag and one large suitcase (90 x 70 x 30 centimetres max.).
• Bicycles: CrossCountry recommends reserving a bike space. E-bikes cannot exceed 250 watts, and devices like e-scooters are banned.
• Children: Under-5s travel free with an adult. For 5–15-year-olds and 16–17 Saver Railcard holders, most fares are half price. Groups of adults and kids can also save with the Family and Friends Railcard.
• Pets: Two pets can travel free of charge. They must be kept in an enclosed carrier or on a lead and stay off seats.
• Passenger Assist: If you need help during your journey, like handling luggage or using ramps, book assistance by phone or using the text relay service or Transreport’s app or form.

Northern train classes

Northern doesn’t currently offer First Class accommodation. Standard Class carriages have comfortable seats and luggage storage racks. Newly refurbished trains also offer free Wi-Fi access. Fares tend to be available 12 weeks in advance. Plan ahead to buy cheap train tickets.

• Luggage: Northern allows a reasonable amount of luggage on board. All items must be kept in the luggage racks or underneath your seat.
• Bicycles: Bike spaces are only allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. E-scooters are banned.
• Children: Under-5s travel free with an adult. Fares are typically half price for 5–15-year-olds and older teens with a 16–17 Saver Railcard. You can also save with the Family and Friends Railcard.
• Pets: Passengers can bring up to two pets. They must stay off the seats and be in a secure carrier or on a lead.
