London Cannon Street train station
Cannon Street station is a railway terminus on the South Eastern Main Line. Located in the City of London, the building sits on the site of a former medieval steelyard, the English Hanseatic League trading base. Cannon Street was built to give the City a rail terminal that could also compete with the rival London, Chatham and Dover Railway. A new bridge crossing the Thames was completed in 1866 for this purpose, with the station opening the same year.
Cannon Street became a stop for services to and from Charing Cross (including continental trains to Europe), and the shuttle between both termini was a popular route linking the City to the West End. However, footfall began to decline when the more direct and reliable Underground network continued to develop. London Cannon Street remained a bustling commuter station during the week, but it had been closed on Sundays from the early 20th century for almost 100 years.
