Old Trafford is a stadium that hardly needs an introduction. Home to the indomitable and mighty Manchester United. With a capacity of 74,197, it is the largest football stadium in the UK and the 12th largest in Europe.

The stadium even has its own dedicated train station, which is only open on match days. So, getting there by train makes perfect sense.

In this article, we’ll uncover more about Old Trafford Stadium and find out which is the best way to get there using the rail network.

Old Trafford

About Old Trafford: the essentials

Nicknamed ‘The Theatre of Dreams’ by former Manchester United and England player Bobby Charlton, Old Trafford has been United’s home ground since 1910. Since then, the stadium has undergone numerous expansions, becoming a behemoth that can now accommodate tens of thousands of fans.

The stadium serves as a global icon, not only for Manchester but for English football as a whole, with fans from all over the world, including the United States, China, Australia, and Japan, visiting the stadium to support their beloved Manchester United.

Old Trafford has hosted an FA Cup Final, countless semi-finals, the 2003 Champions League Final, as well as England matches in the 1966 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 1966, and the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022. In 2012, it also hosted Olympic football matches during the London Olympic Games. It has even hosted five editions of the Rugby League World Cup in 1995, 2000, 2013 and 2021.

How to get to Old Trafford by train?

Getting to Old Trafford is easy, considering that the stadium has its own dedicated train station, Manchester United Football Ground, which Northern operates. The easiest way to reach the station is from Manchester Piccadilly, the city's largest station. It’s also possible to catch a Metrolink Tram to Old Trafford station. From there, it’s only a ten-minute walk to Old Trafford. Here are some popular routes to the stadium:

What to do at Old Trafford?

Any serious Manchester United supporter must take the stadium and museum tour at some point. Firstly, the stadium tour shows supporters the areas that are usually out of bounds on match days, like the dressing rooms, media centres, the dugout, the tunnel, and the view from the pitch. At the same time, the museum tour showcases the team’s illustrious history, including its numerous trophies, memorabilia, vintage kits, and much more.

There are also nearby attractions if you’d like to visit before or after the match. These include the Imperial War Museum North, The Trafford Centre, and MediaCityUK, and there are tons of exciting restaurants, bars, and pubs waiting for you back in Manchester City Centre.

Travel tips for visiting Old Trafford

If you’re planning to travel to Old Trafford by train, getting your tickets sorted early is a wise idea. Not only will it give you time to familiarise yourself with your route, but it’ll also increase your chances of snagging the cheapest fares before they increase as the day of the match gets closer.

For a smoother and less crowded journey, and to save some money, consider travelling off-peak. Don’t forget to use your Railcard for an extra discount on your ticket, as some Railcards can give you up to 30% off your train ticket fee.

To ensure you arrive with plenty of time to spare for a drink and a bite to eat before the match, aim to get to the stadium about one to two hours before kick-off. This way, you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere without feeling rushed
