Trains to the Etihad Stadium: A Comprehensive Guide
Since 2003, the Etihad Stadium has been synonymous with Manchester City’s rise to global football stardom. The stadium has been the site of numerous monumental victories for Manchester City.

Beyond its role as a football stadium, the Etihad regularly hosts numerous concerts, like The Stone Roses, Coldplay, The Weeknd, and Ed Sheeran and also hosts rugby matches, like the Rugby World Cup in 2015. All of these events, from football to music, help cement the stadium as a crucial Manchester landmark.

The stadium itself isn’t challenging to reach and isn’t far from Manchester Piccadilly, the city’s main train station and the second-largest UK train station outside of London.

This article will cover the Etihad Stadium and provide information on how to get there using the rail network, as well as offer some useful tips on saving money when planning your journey.

About the Etihad Stadium: the essentials

The City of Manchester Stadium, The Etihad, The Etihad Stadium, or whichever name you’d like to call it, there’s no arguing that the stadium is iconic. Built to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games and named The Etihad due to sponsorship in 2003, the stadium has since hosted numerous monumental domestic football finals, the 2008 UEFA Cup Final, and the England football internationals as well as rugby league matches, the Rugby World Cup in 2015, a boxing world title fight, and summer concerts during the football off-season.

The stadium is now synonymous around the world with its home team, Manchester City, and legions of its devoted fans travel from around the region and even the rest of the world to walk through its gates.

Getting to the Etihad Stadium by train

Reaching the Etihad Stadium is a straightforward process. The nearest train station is Ashburys Railway Station and is served by Northern; however, it’s only five minutes away from Manchester’s leading station, Manchester Piccadilly. So many visitors to the stadium go to Piccadilly first, and then change to Ashburys, or catch the Metrolink tram directly to the Etihad.  The stadium is only a ten-minute walk from Ashburys Station.

1: Manchester Piccadilly to Ashburys

It takes only four to five minutes to get from Manchester Piccadilly to Ashburys with Northern. Trains come every few minutes.

2: York to Manchester Piccadilly
On average, the journey from York to Manchester Piccadilly takes one hour and forty-six minutes when travelling with TransPennine Express. Direct trains depart approximately every hour. From Manchester Piccadilly, you’ll have to either catch a train to Ashburys or get a Metrolink Tram to the Etihad.
3: Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Piccadilly
Getting from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Piccadilly takes around fifty minutes to one hour with either Northern or East Midlands Railway. To reach your destination from Manchester Piccadilly, opt for a train to Ashburys or a Metrolink tram for the Etihad.
4: London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly
The average journey from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly takes around two hours and twelve minutes with Avanti West Coast. From Manchester Piccadilly, you can take a train to Ashburys or a Metrolink tram to the Etihad.

What to do at the Etihad Stadium?

For football fans, the Etihad Stadium offers a fantastic experience to explore one of the hallowed grounds of English football. Stadium tours are a very popular option, allowing visitors to see what goes on behind the scenes after the final whistle. You can sit in the manager’s dugout, see the home dressing room, see the stadium from the footballers’ perspective, pitch side, and you can even interact with a virtual Pep Guardiola in the press conference room using top-notch advanced digital immersive technology.

Although the Etihad Stadium doesn’t have a dedicated on-site museum in the traditional sense, like some football stadiums in the UK, the stadium tour incorporates elements of the club’s history throughout, utilising audio-visual storytelling to captivate guests.

If you can’t get enough football and are looking to learn some more about the beautiful game, then you’ll love the National Football Museum back in Manchester City Centre. It’s only a few minutes’ walk from Manchester Victoria Station and Manchester Cathedral.

Of course, the official CityStore is an excellent spot if you want to stock up on all things Man City, which offers everything from branded merchandise to replica gifts and souvenirs.

Travel tips for visiting the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City, and by extension, the Etihad Stadium, are among the biggest names in English football. They usually play high-stakes games for big cup finals, whether for the English or European championships. Manchester is also one of the largest cities in the UK. So, getting to a Manchester City game at the Etihad can be quite hectic with tens of thousands of people heading to the match all at once.

The best way to avoid the crowds and ensure a smooth journey is to plan your route. Booking your train tickets early, allowing yourself enough time to reach the stadium, checking live National Rail travel updates, and travelling off-peak are not only great ways to avoid the crowds of footy fans but also a way to save money. Adding a Railcard when booking your tickets is also a great way to secure a discount.

It's also a good idea to arrive at the station one hour before the match kicks off. To ensure the minimum amount of fuss, it’s also worth checking what you’re permitted to bring into the stadium.

Preparation is always key. That’s why it’s best to use TrainPal to book your tickets in advance. Get the cheapest train tickets to the Etihad Stadium today.
