Getting the train to the stadium is incredibly easy, as it’s only a fifteen-minute walk at most to reach the stadium from Cardiff Central. So, hopping on a train, sitting back, and relaxing before the match makes common sense. It’s a much better idea than finding a place to park or sitting on a couch.

This article will highlight some of the key features of the Principality Stadium and uncover the best ways to reach it by train. It will also provide some handy tips for saving money when getting to the stadium by train, to help your journey go extra smoothly.

The Principality Stadium

About the Principality Stadium: the essentials

The Principality Stadium began life in 1999 as the Millennium Stadium, designed to mark the start of the third millennium. Similar to the Millennium Dome in London, or the Millennium Bridge in Newcastle. It was also built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup.  Since 2016, however, it has been known as the Principality Stadium for sponsorship purposes.

The stadium is the home of the Welsh national rugby union team and has hosted countless rugby events over the years. Outside of rugby, it has hosted a football matches during the 2012 Olympic Games, motorcycle speedway events, boxing matches, the Super Special Stage of the Wales Rally Great Britain, numerous concerts, as well as hosting FA Cup, League Cup, and Football League play-off finals whilst Wembley Stadium in London was undergoing renovations between 2001 and 2006.

The stadium has an enormous capacity of 73,931 for both football and rugby, making it one of the largest in the UK. That’s not all, the stadium has a fully retractable roof, making it one of the largest indoor arenas anywhere in the world.

The tour offers plenty of photo and selfie opportunities along the way. Tours offer an exclusive look at the stadium, including a walk beside the pitch, the Ray Gravell Press Conference Suite that’s used to brief the media, a visit to the home and away dressing Rooms, and a walk through the players' tunnel leading to the pitch.

The Principality Stadium is located right in the heart of Cardiff City Centre, so there are plenty of places to eat and drink before your match, concert, or event. Near the stadium on Central Square, there are restaurants serving pub classics like Glassworks, the café Tramshed Tech, and a platter of other establishments like The Cardiff Townhouse and Maison de Boeuf.

Travel tips for visiting the Principality Stadium

As no matter how lucky you’re feeling, you can sometimes be caught out by disruptions, delays, or just be plain old unlucky. Before you travel, it’s worthwhile checking live travel updates just to be safe.

If you’d like to save money, booking your train tickets in advance is also a great idea. This can save you money as it means you’ll get a head start on the other punters looking for the exact train tickets, at the same time, on the same day. If you aren’t fussy about what time you get to Cardiff or what time you’ll leave, you might want to buy an off-peak train ticket, which will be cheaper as you won’t be travelling during busy periods.

Using a Railcard is one of the best ways to save money, as some Railcards offer huge discounts, making your money go that bit further. You can even sometimes recoup the cost of the Railcard in just one journey!
