East Midlands Railway trains from London to Nottingham

By Enrico Belcore | Updated March 25, 2026

East Midlands Railway (EMR) operates direct Intercity services on the Midland Main Line between London St Pancras International and Nottingham, with trains running roughly twice per hour throughout the day. The journey covers 174 km (108 miles) and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

First Class vs Standard — What to choose?

  • Standard Class includes free Wi-Fi, outlets at your seat (normally one per pair), seat reservations, and space for luggage. A trolley catering service operates on selected trains — though it is not guaranteed on every departure.
  • First Class offers noticeably more space, single-seat table configurations ideal for solo travellers, and complimentary catering from Monday to Saturday. Meals and drinks are included, while alcoholic drinks are available to purchase but are not included. There is no dedicated EMR First Class lounge at St Pancras. All First Class perks are delivered at your seat, on board.

What is the luggage allowance?

EMR's official luggage policy permits each passenger to bring a maximum of two items of luggage on board: one main item of up to 90 x 70 x 30 cm, plus one smaller bag or cabin-sized case. Overhead racks, luggage areas at the ends of carriages, and under-seat space are all available. Bikes can be taken on Intercity services to and from London, but a reservation is required.

Is East Midlands Railway First Class Worth It on London to Nottingham trains?

First class can be a good option, regardless of the short trip, for the included breakfast when catching an early train and needing some extra space to work. If you travel frequently, you can bid for last-minute upgrades at reduced prices using the official app.

The scenic side

Key landmarks

Look right just after the East Midlands Parkway stop for the silhouette of Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station — one of the largest industrial sites in the Midlands. The River Trent appears shortly after, tracing the southern boundary of the city.

Arriving at Nottingham

Nottingham Station — officially still known to many as Nottingham Midland — is the busiest station in the East Midlands and the principal arrival point for visitors to the city. The current building dates largely from a grand Midland Railway reconstruction in 1904, giving it an ornate terracotta facade.

The correct exit

Station Street / Main Entrance (North): The principal exit leads onto Station Street, directly

north of the station concourse. This is the main gateway to the city centre and the quickest route to the Old Market Square, the Lace Market, Nottingham Castle and the NET tram stop.

Queen's Road Exit (South): A footbridge crossing connects to Queen's Road on the south side of the station, useful if heading to the Meadows, the university campus, or the south of the city.
Trent Street Exit: A secondary exit connects to Trent Street to the north-east — handy for taxis and for the Broadmarsh area.

Onward Travel

Tram (NET): The Nottingham Express Transit tram stop is directly outside the Station, connecting to the city centre, the University of Nottingham, the Royal Centre.
Buses: The closest bus hub to the station is Broadmarsh Bus Station, adjacent to the former Broadmarsh Shopping Centre on Canal Street, just a few minutes' walk from the station entrance. Services from Broadmarshcover routes to Keyworth, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Cotgrave, Kegworth, and East Midlands Airport.
Taxis: A taxi rank is located at the Trent Street exit on the north-east side of the station building.

Bikes & Cycle Hire: Nottingham has a growing cycle network making it very easy and pleasant to move around the city by bike. The station has secure cycle storage facilities.

Walkability

The Old Market Square is a ten-minute walk from the main entrance, the Lace Market is around 15 minutes on foot and Nottingham Castle and the historic cave network beneath the city are 20 minutes' walk heading west.
