16-17 Saver Railcards can now be used by 18-year-olds for 50% off

Great news for young rail travellers: the 16-17 Saver Railcard is becoming even more useful. From 17 August 2026, changes announced by the Department for Transport (DfT) mean that your 16-17 Saver can remain valid after you turn 18, provided you bought it while you were aged 17.

Previously, the Railcard’s validity ended on the day before your 18th birthday if that came before the end of its normal validity period. Under the updated rules, your 16-17 Saver will instead remain valid for a full year from the date you purchase it.

Can I use a 16-17 Saver when I'm 18?

Yes. This is the key change to the 16-17 Saver’s validity.

If you buy a 16-17 Saver shortly before your 18th birthday, you can continue using it for the remainder of its 12-month validity period after turning 18. In other words, buying the Railcard towards the end of your 17th year could give you almost a full year of 50% off eligible UK train fares while you're 18.

The name remains 16-17 Saver because the Railcard is still designed for passengers aged 16 and 17 when they purchase it. The change simply means that turning 18 no longer automatically cuts short an existing Railcard.

Rail Minister Lord Hendry said the change would help reduce travel costs for teenagers at an important stage of their lives, including those entering further education, vocational training or the workplace.

How much can you save with a 16-17 Saver?

The 16-17 Saver offers 50% off most UK rail fares, making it one of the most generous Railcards available. Discounts can apply to Standard, Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance tickets, as well as eligible Season tickets.

Another major advantage is that the 16-17 Saver doesn't have the minimum fare restrictions that apply to some other Railcards. There are also no restrictions on the time of day you can travel, so you can use the discount for journeys throughout the day.

The Railcard normally costs £35 for one year. The amount you can save depends on how frequently you travel and the fares you would otherwise pay, but official figures show that the average 16-17 Saver holder saved around £406 between April 2024 and March 2025.

There is also no limit on the number of journeys you can make using your Railcard during its validity period. The more you travel by train, therefore, the greater your potential savings.

When should I buy a 16-17 Saver?

With the new validity rules taking effect from 17 August 2026, timing your purchase could make a significant difference if you're approaching your 18th birthday.

As long as you purchase your 16-17 Saver while you're still 17, it can now remain valid for a full year from the purchase date. Buying shortly before your 18th birthday could therefore allow you to take advantage of the 50% Railcard discount throughout almost your entire 18th year.

If you're eligible, it's worth comparing the cost of the Railcard with how much you expect to spend on train travel over the next year. For regular rail users, the potential savings can quickly outweigh the initial £35 cost.
