Train travel from London to Bristol Temple Meads

Ensure every step of our journey from London to Bristol is a breeze with our train travel tips and insights for this route.

Departing from London Paddington

London Paddington is a large station – we recommend arriving at least 20 minutes before your scheduled departure. If your train is at the end of a long platform, it can take 5 minutes just to reach your carriage (check the carriage indicators to know where to wait!).
  • Finding your platform: Trains usually depart from Platforms 1–5 or Platforms 8 or 9. Head towards ‘the Lawn’ – this is the Main Concourse at the back of the station. Across from here, Platforms 1–5 are directly in the centre and to the left, while Platforms 8 and 9 are a bit further to the right, past the entrance to the Hilton Hotel.
  • Arriving by Tube: If you are coming from the Bakerloo, District or Circle Underground lines, follow signs for ‘Way Out’ and ‘National Rail’, and you will emerge near Platform 5 at the Lawn. For the Hammersmith & City Line, you will arrive on Platforms 15/16, so you’ll need to cross the high-level footbridge and take the stairs or lift down to your specific platform.
  • Iconic sights: If your train is on Platform 1, make sure to look out for the famous Paddington Bear statue, as well at the memorial to WWI soldiers near the clock.

Onboard trains from London to Bristol Temple Meads

Once you board: If you don’t have a reserved seat, look for the digital displays above the seats. A green light means the seat is free, while a red light indicates it is reserved.
  • Best side for views: Sit on the left-hand side of the train if you want to see the best sights and take snaps.
  • Key sights: About 1 hr into the journey, you’ll be treated to a great view of the Box Tunnel – a famous engineering feat by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. You’ll also catch some riverside views as you approach Bath Spa, the stop before Bristol, featuring the River Avon accompanied by the city’s beautiful limestone architecture.

Arriving at Bristol Temple Meads

Onward travel: Bristol Temple Meads is about a 15–20 minute walk from the city centre, but you’ll also have multiple other options for onward travel from the train station.
  • Leave through the Main Exit on the left after passing the ticket barriers to get to the station forecourt. This is where you’ll find taxis, the Airport Flyer A1 bus and local city buses (take the 8 or 9 First Bus service for the city centre).
  • If you’re heading towards the Temple Quay business district of the ferry landing, you’ll need to take the side exit. Follow signs for ‘The Friary’. The ferry offers a scenic way to reach the city centre in 20 minutes, with boats typically departing every 2 hours.

If you’d rather walk, it’s relatively flat and suitable for suitcases. Walk down the station approach slope from the main exit, turn right at Temple Gate road and follow Victoria Street directly into the centre. It’s also possible to exit via The Friary for a scenic walk along the river path through Castle Park.
