  • ScotRail: Highly frequent service that’s ideal for passengers who prioritise flexibility. Operates on a ‘turn-up-and-go’ basis; no advance discounts or seat reservations on this route. Choice of departure from Glasgow Queen Street (the faster route) or Glasgow Central.
  • Lumo: Typically offers one direct service each day. Best fares for advance booking. Single-class service, making this a good option for those who value affordability above all.
  • CrossCountry: More traditional train experience, with exceptional First Class service, spacious luggage racks and trolley service. Limited departures, but advance tickets often cheaper than ScotRail.

Train travel from Glasgow to Edinburgh

Travel like a local from Glasgow to Edinburgh by following our comprehensive train tips.

Departing from Glasgow Queen Street: Which level for Edinburgh trains?

Glasgow Queen Street station is split into two levels: a High Level and a Low Level. The High Level is the main street-level terminal for express trains to Edinburgh via Falkirk High (usually Platforms 2–5), while the underground Low Level is usually reserved for east-west routes like via Airdrie/Bathgate, usually departing from Platform 9. Use the stairs or a lift near Platform 7 on the High Level to move between levels.
For trains from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh, which usually serve the Central route via Shotts, keep in mind the following:
  • Platforms: Services to Edinburgh typically depart from higher-numbered platforms on the ground level, Platforms 11–15. The Low Level hosts Platforms 16 and 17.
  • Snacks: You’ll find the main retail hub on the south side of the concourse, with familiar options like M&S Simply Food, Boots and plenty of coffee shops available.
Top tip: If you arrive at Glasgow Central but need to get to Queen Street station for your train (or vice versa), there is a free bus link that runs between the two stations for ticket holders. This station link bus runs every 15–20 minutes. Alternatively, the walk takes about 7–15 minutes.

Onboard trains from Glasgow to Edinburgh

There are four routes from Glasgow to Edinburgh: the Express route via Falkirk High (ScotRail, Lumo), the North Clyde route via Airdrie/Bathgate (ScotRail), the Central Route via Shotts (ScotRail) and the Carstairs Line (ScotRail, CrossCountry).

  • Express Route: Offers sweeping views of the Almond Valley as it crosses the viaduct upon approach to Edinburgh. The left side of the train offers the best views of these rolling hills.
  • North Clyde route: Takes you through the heart of Scotland’s former industrial landscape. You’ll be greeted by views of the Pentland Hills in the distance as you approach Edinburgh, and both sides of the train offer similar views.
  • Central Route: Offers expansive views of rugged moorlands from a higher elevation. The right side is your best bet for views on this line. The Carstairs Line joins this route after an initial journey through countryside views.

Arriving at Edinburgh Waverley

Located in the valley between the historic Old Town and the Georgian New Town, Edinburgh Waverley can be confusing to navigate if you’re not a frequent visitor.

  • The Princes Street Exit: The northern ramps of this exit lead to high-street shopping, the Edinburgh Tram link to the airport, and easy access to the New Town.
  • The Market Street Exit: This southern exit will lead you to the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, or the university. Choose this exit if you want to head right into the heart of the historic Old Town.
Onward Travel: The central location of this station means you can get pretty much anywhere in the city centre on foot. If you’re laden with luggage or heading further afield, however, follow signs to the Market Street taxi rank.
If your service is to Edinburgh Park, you’ll arrive in the city’s major business and retail district.
  • Exiting: The main exit leads you right to the Edinburgh Park business district. You’ll also be able to take the pedestrian underpass toward the Gyle Shopping Centre to avoid the busy A720 bypass.
  • Onward travel: The Edinburgh Park Station tram stop is right beside the station, and will bring you to Edinburgh Airport or the city centre. You’ll also find bus stops for links to the city right outside the station.
