Train travel from London to Glasgow

Travel nearly 400 miles from London to Glasgow along the West Coast Main Line, passing through the English Midlands, the scenic fringes of the Lake District, and the Southern Uplands of Scotland before arriving in the heart of England.

London Euston: Getting to the Platform

Euston has its own Underground station directly beneath the concourse, served by both the Victoria line and the Northern line (Bank and Charing Cross branches), connecting you to virtually anywhere in central London in under 15 minutes.

London Euston is located on Euston Road in the London Borough of Camden, in the northern part of central London. As you enter through the main concourse, ticket offices and self-service machines are located towards the front, and all long-distance platforms are at the far end of the hall. The Caledonian sleeper normally departs from Platform 1, where you can also find The Caledonian Guest Lounge, right next to the departing services.

What is the station layout?

The station has 18 platforms, all located at the far end of the main concourse. Two platforms are extra-long to accommodate the 16-car Caledonian Sleeper. Luggage storage is available at the station (Excess Baggage Co., near the entrance to Platform 16). First Class passengers on Avanti West Coast can use the First Class Lounge on the mezzanine level above the concourse.

Onboard trains from London to Glasgow

All Avanti and Caledonian trains on this route are modern and comfortable, with roomy seats and Wi-fi and outlets in all classes. The route is especially stunning as you will pass through some of the best natural landscapes in the UK – North of Preston, the Lake District and the Scottish Southern Uplands will unfold one after the other.

The scenic side

The route is particularly rewarding from Preston northwards. On the left side of the train (westward-facing), you can see the Cumbrian coast and the hills framing the Lake District as the train skirts its eastern edge. On the right, the open countryside rises towards the Northern Fells. The route passes through Oxenholme and Penrith before crossing into Scotland.

Key landmarks

Look out for the Solway Firth as the train approaches Carlisle — the wide estuary marks the boundary between England and Scotland. Shortly after crossing into Scotland, the landscape softens into the rolling green hills of Dumfries and Galloway.

Arriving at Glasgow Central

Glasgow Central is Scotland’s busiest station, right in the heart of Glasgow city centre. Step off the train and you are immediately in the middle of  Gordon Street, with shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions within walking distance.

The correct exit

  • Gordon Street Exit (Main Exit): The principal way out leads directly onto Gordon Street and into the city centre. This is the quickest route to George Square, Buchanan Street (the main shopping street), and the Merchant City.

  • Union Street Exit: Exits onto Union Street to the south of the main concourse, useful if heading towards the Southside or catching a bus on Argyle Street.

  • Central Station Bridge: An elevated pedestrian walkway runs from the station across the River Clyde – handy if heading towards the SEC, Finnieston, or the West End.

Onward Travel

  • Glasgow Subway: The St Enoch Subway station is just a few minutes’ walk from the main exit, connecting to the West End, the Southside, and back to Buchanan Street.

  • Buses: Buchanan Bus Station, the main hub for city and intercity buses is a short walk via Buchanan Street.

  • Taxis: A taxi rank is located directly outside the main Gordon Street entrance.

Walkability

Glasgow Central is one of the UK’s best-connected city-centre arrivals. The Style Mile (Buchanan Street and Argyle Street), George Square, the Gallery of Modern Art, and the Merchant City are all within a 10-minute walk. For the West End’s Kelvingrove Museum and the Botanic Gardens, the Subway is the easiest option, taking around 10 minutes to Hillhead.
