As the third busiest railway station in the city, Manchester Oxford Road has no shortage of frequent services to/from stations across England, Scotland and Wales. Hourly departures run to places like Nottingham, Liverpool, and Holyhead. TransPennine Express, Northern, East Midlands Railway (EMR) and Transport for Wales (TfW) operate the trains.

The Oxford Road neighbourhood blends old and new, with plenty of entertainment and dining spots a stone’s throw from the station. • Standard Class: Enjoy comfortable seats, free Wi-Fi and power sockets (table seats and paired seating) in Standard Class. Some TransPennine Express trains also offer food and drink to purchase from the Express Café. It’s open on weekdays from 07:00 to 18:30 as well as weekends between 09:00 and 18:30. Buy cheap train tickets when you book ahead.
• First Class: Edinburgh to Manchester First Class carriages have a power socket at every seat. You’ll also get complimentary refreshments on board. The Express Plus restaurant is open from 07:00 to 18:30 Monday–Friday and between 09:00 and 18:30 on weekends.

TransPennine Express train travel advice

• Luggage: Bring two larger bags or suitcases (30 x 70 x 90 centimetres max.) and a smaller piece of hand luggage.
• Bicycles: You must reserve a bike space on TransPennine Express services. Devices like e-scooters aren’t allowed, and charging e-bikes on board is not permitted.
• Children: Two under-5s travel for free. 5–15-year-olds pay half the adult fare for most Advance tickets. Discounted tickets are also available for 16–17 Saver Railcard and Family and Friends Railcard holders. Pushchairs should be folded and stowed in the luggage racks or cycle area (when not occupied).
• Pets: Up to two pets are permitted. They should be on a lead or in a carrier at all times.
