  • Route 22: from Boscombe, Pokesdown, Springbourne, Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Castlepoint (Stop 6)
  • Route 50: from Sandbanks, West Cliff, Canford Cliffs and Westbourne (Stop A)
  • Route 737: from Bournemouth Airport, Parley Cross, Northbourne and Moordown (Stop 2, limited Mon–Fri mornings only, no weekend service)
Station facilities

Bournemouth is Category B2 for accessibility — there's step-free access from the main entrance but no lifts between the two platform sides (this won't affect your taking the train to Southampton, though). 

  • Toilets: These — including the accessible toilets — are on platforms 2 and 3. You'll need to request a RADAR key to open.
  • Amenities: There's sheltered seating, refreshments, shops and free Wi-Fi. 
  • Parking: Across the two car parks, there are 414 spaces, including 7 accessible bays. Hourly parking starts from £1.00 in the main car park, while in the premium car park, prices start from £5.50 off-peak. 
  • Bikes: There are 118 sheltered spaces with CCTV.
  • Pets: If your dog needs a walk before the journey, Knyveton Gardens is around 11 minutes on foot, east along Holdenhurst Road toward Southcote Road.

Onboard trains from Bournemouth to Southampton Central

CrossCountry's and SWR's express services take around 28 minutes and stop at Brockenhurst only. SWR's slower stopping services take around 36–51 minutes and call at Pokesdown, Christchurch, Hinton Admiral, New Milton, Sway, Brockenhurst, Beaulieu Road, Ashurst New Forest and Totton before Southampton Central.
  • Best side for views: Sit on the right-hand side facing forward for the New Forest heathland and woodland between Brockenhurst and Totton. Keep an eye out for the New Forest's wild ponies near the tracks.
  • The "you're nearly there" cue: Once the train leaves Totton, you'll see Southampton's Western Docks. 

Arriving at Southampton Central

Southampton Central station is on Blechynden Terrace and trains from Bournemouth arrive at Platforms 1 and 2.

It's important to note the lifts are being refurbished between 13th April and 26th August 2026, which affects step-free access between platforms. If you need step-free access during this period, travel on a stopping service, which calls at Platform 2. 

Getting from the station on foot
  • West Quay Shopping Centre: From the Platform 1 exit on Blechynden Terrace, turn left and head south along Western Esplanade. It takes around 5 minutes. From the south exit on West Quay Road, the shopping centre is directly in front of you.
  • Watts Park: From the Platform 1 exit, walk around 7 minutes south-east along Western Esplanade to the Civic Centre junction. The park borders Havelock Road and Civic Centre Road.
  • City centre (Above Bar Street): From the Platform 1 exit, follow Western Esplanade and continue onto Civic Centre Road, which leads into Above Bar Street. It's around a 15-minute walk.
  • Town Quay and the Isle of Wight ferry: From the south exit on West Quay Road, head south along West Quay Road and then Harbour Parade, and continue down to the waterfront at Town Quay. The walk takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
Getting from the station by bus

Buses stop outside the Platform 1 exit and on the south side of the station. Here are some useful services for getting around:

  • Routes 7, 17, 19 and 19a: City centre, Shirley, General Hospital, Princess Anne Hospital, Ocean Village, Thornhill and Woolston (Stop SA)
  • Route QC: Town Quay and the Isle of Wight ferry to Cowes (Stop SF)
  • Route SF1: St Mary's Stadium on match days only (Stop SF)

Southampton Central is a Category A station — it has step-free access to all platforms via lifts. 

The lifts are being refurbished between 13 April and 26 August 2026, so if you need step-free access between platforms during this period, travel on a stopping service into Platform 2.
