Planning your journey: Trains from Verona to Venice

By Joshua Pearson | Updated July 30, 2026

Departure Station: Departing from Verona Porta Nuova

When you’re catching a train from Verona to Venice, you will depart from Verona Porta Nuova, which is the city’s main railway station. As the main Verona to Venice train station, it makes sense that you’ll find it located within the historic centre, about 20 minutes on foot from Piazza Bra and the Arena. If you’re staying in central Verona, as many people do, it’s an easy transfer. You can simply jump in a taxi or a local bus, which runs frequently from the old town.

Inside Verona Porta Nuova, you’ll find clear platform signage and departure boards, cafés and small convenience shops, ticket machines and staffed desks, and waiting areas for longer stops.

There’s also a left luggage office, known as Deposito Bagagli, which is useful if you want to explore Verona before your departure. It’s a good idea to check your platform carefully before boarding, as Verona to Venice trains can depart from different areas of the station.

Arrival Station: Arriving at Venice Santa Lucia or Venice Mestre

There are two main stations in Venice, which means you can choose the Italy Verona to Venice route that best suits where you’re going to be staying.

Venice Santa Lucia

Venice Santa Lucia is the main arrival station for most visitors and, as it sits directly on the Grand Canal, you step off the train and straight into Venice’s historic setting. From here, vaporetto stops are directly outside the station, which is where you can catch a waterbus, and walking routes into Cannaregio and San Polo begin. If you’re staying in central Venice, this is the most convenient arrival point.

Venice Mestre

Some Verona to Venice Trenitalia and Italo services terminate at Venice Mestre, which is located on the mainland. Venice Mestre is one of northern Italy's busiest railway stations and a major interchange for both regional and high-speed trains. Some Verona to Venice services terminate here, while others continue across to Santa Lucia.

If you arrive at Venice Mestre and need to reach historic Venice, you can continue by frequent regional or high-speed train to Santa Lucia in around 10 minutes. Alternatively, buses and tram line T1 operate regularly between Mestre and Piazzale Roma, where you can continue on foot or by vaporetto. Taxi services are also available outside the station, making Mestre a convenient arrival point for travellers staying on the mainland or near Venice Marco Polo Airport.

Be sure to check your ticket carefully, as Venice Santa Lucia and Venice Mestre are not interchangeable.

Travelling with Trenitalia and Italo: Onboard experience

Trenitalia and Italo both operate services on the Verona to Venice route, with trains running as part of Trenitalia's Frecciarossa fleet and Italo's high-speed train service.

Standard Class: High-Speed Frecciarossa services

Standard Class on Trenitalia's Frecciarossa trains is modern and comfortable, and perfectly designed for short intercity journeys. You can expect seats of two, reasonable legroom, plug sockets close to most seats, air conditioning, luggage racks and storage at the end of the carriage. Though it’s by no means the most luxurious of journeys, it’s comfortable considering the Verona to Venice train travel time is around an hour.

What to Expect from Frecciarossa First Class?

First Class on Trenitalia's Frecciarossa is split into two categories, Business and Executive, and both offer more space and a quieter environment. Benefits of booking First Class on a Frecciarossa train include wider seats with extra legroom, fewer passengers and a more relaxed, quieter carriage atmosphere. Occasionally, a light refreshment may be offered depending on the service. For a short journey like Verona to Venice, it’s a comfort upgrade rather than a necessity, and upgrading is likely going to depend on the budget you have set yourself for train tickets from Verona to Venice.

Does the Verona-to-Venice Trenitalia train allow luggage?

Luggage rules are relaxed on Trenitalia trains from Verona to Venice, but space is limited during busy periods. To keep things organised, place large suitcases in racks at the end of carriages and store smaller bags overhead. It’s also a good idea to keep valuables with you during the journey. Boarding a few minutes early can help secure luggage space near your seat.

Verona to Venice travel tips

Travelling from Verona to Venice by rail doesn’t have to be stressful or complicated, but it does help to have a few travel tips guiding you. Simplify travelling from Verona to Venice by rail with TrainPal.

  • Book Verona to Venice train tickets early: If you want to find cheaper train tickets, you need to book early.
