Departure Station: Departing from Verona Porta Nuova

Verona's other station, Porta Vescovo, is smaller and served only by regional trains, located on the eastern side of the city. Reaching Milan from Porta Vescovo takes considerably longer. Unless your accommodation is specifically near Porta Vescovo, there's no reason to board from it. Porta Nuova is faster, more direct, and far better connected.

There are several café counters nearby for a coffee before boarding. Located right inside the station, the Porta Nuova bistro has traditional Italian espresso and pastries in a fast-paced environment served at the counter. A luggage storage office is available inside the station near the main hall.

Arrival Station: Arriving at Milano Centrale

Milan's main station is just outside the historic centre, just a 10-minute metro ride from the Duomo. The Metro Lines 2 (green) and 3 (yellow) depart directly from the lower level, reaching the Duomo in two stops on Line 3. Taxis queue outside the main exit on Piazza Duca d'Aosta. 

Milano Centrale itself is worth a few minutes of exploration — the grand vaulted main hall is one of the most striking public spaces in Italy, and most travellers walk straight through it without looking up. Within the station, there are several shops and restaurants that will keep you entertained until your next connection. 

Verona to Milan is well served by Trenitalia, with both regional trains and high-speed trains. Italo services serve the line directly in about 1h13, as well as Frecciarossa, Trenord, and Eurocity. Italo

• Average journey time: about 1 hour 13 minutes
• Departs from: Verona Porta Nuova 
• Ideal for: travellers who want a comfort-first ride between the two cities; couples and small groups chasing discount fares when booking in advance; anyone under 29 eligible for Italo Young pricing
• Onboard perks: Wide reclining leather seats with individual power outlets and footrests; snack vending area onboard; no check-in required before boarding; oversized luggage travels free.

Trenord

• Average journey time: roughly 1 hour 50 minutes
• Departs from: Verona Porta Nuova
• Ideal for: budget travellers who don't mind extra stops; those exploring Lombardy towns along the way rather than heading straight through; last-minute travellers
• Onboard perks: No seat reservation needed, just board and sit anywhere; luggage racks onboard.
• Good to know: This is a regional line with frequent stops, so it takes a bit longer than the high-speed options and the general environment can be more chaotic than high-speed services. Prices are lower than those of other providers and don't increase over time.

EC (EuroCity)

• Average journey time: about 1 hour 23 minutes
• Departs from: Verona Porta Nuova
• Ideal for: Those wanting a step up in comfort without paying Frecciarossa or Italo Executive prices
• Onboard perks: Spacious armchairs, at-seat power outlets, and reading lights in Second Class; First Class adds wider seats, extra legroom, and at-seat catering service
• Good to know: EuroCity runs about 3 times a day on this route, so it's less frequent than Frecciarossa or Italo — worth checking timetables in advance if this is your preferred option

• Book early for the best fares. Prices climb closer to departure, especially on popular morning and evening trains. Booking ahead can save you a lot on your trip. 
• Track your train in real time. Delays are uncommon on this route but do happen, particularly on Frecciabianca services sharing track with regional trains. If you book on TrainPal, you can monitor your train's live status in the app so you know before you leave your hotel.
• Sit on the right for Lake Garda views. Shortly after departing Verona, the line passes close to the eastern edge of Lake Garda — a right-side window seat gives you a brief view of the lake in the distance.
• Allow time at Milano Centrale. It's a large, grand station; give yourself a few extra minutes to navigate to the metro or taxi rank, especially with luggage.
• Watch your belongings at both stations. Verona Porta Nuova and Milano Centrale are busy hubs; keep bags in front of you, particularly around the main halls and ticket areas.
