Planning your journey: Trains from Milan to Florence

By Joshua Pearson | Updated July 30, 2026

Departure Station: Departing from Milan Central or Milan Rogoredo

Most Milan to Florence trains depart from Milan Central, which is the city's main railway station and one of the largest stations in Europe. It’s well connected to Milan’s metro, making it easy to reach from areas like Brera, Duomo or Porta Garibaldi upon arrival. Inside Milan Central you’ll find departure boards, cafés, shops, ticket machines, staffed counters, waiting areas and lounge spaces.

When you’re travelling from Milan to Florence by rail, you might also depart from Milano Rogoredo. This station has similar facilities, but it’s located further south of the city centre and is therefore less central. However, it is connected to key areas via the M3 metro line, which makes it easy to venture further afield. If your ticket shows Milan Rogoredo, allow extra travel time from the centre of the city, as it takes longer to reach than Milan Central.

Arrival Station: Arriving at Firenze Santa Maria Novella

There are a lot of Milan to Florence high-speed trains, and they all arrive at Firenze Santa Maria Novella. Firenze Santa Maria Novella - sometimes referred to as Firenze SMN - is the main railway station in Florence, and it’s therefore the most convenient arrival point when you’re visiting. The station is located on the edge of the city’s centre, meaning you can walk to major sights such as the Duomo, Piazza della Repubblica and Basilica di Santa Maria Novella. Once you step off the train, you’re immediately connected to taxis, buses and walking routes into the city.

Inside and around the station, you’ll find cafés, shops, ticket desks and places to leave your luggage, which is ideal if you want to explore Florence before checking into your accommodation.

Choosing your train: Operators from Milan to Florence

There are two operators running trains from Milan to Florence, both of which offer speedy, modern services. Regardless of whether you choose Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa and Italo, you’ll have the option to depart from either of Milan’s two main stations, before arriving at Firenze Santa Maria Novella. The Milan to Florence train time is around 1 hour and 45 minutes, with some services taking slightly longer.

Frecciarossa high-speed trains

  • Avg. duration: From 1 hour and 55 minutes

  • Departure station: Milan Central or Milan Rogoredo

  • Best for: Milan to Florence, Trenitalia is a good option if you’re looking for a wide range of departure times.

  • Onboard perks: Standard and Business Class tickets, power sockets on most seats and air conditioning.

  • There’s no shortage of Frecciarossa departures throughout the day, stopping at various stations in Milan.

Italo high-speed trains

  • Avg. duration: From 1 hour and 44 minutes

  • Departure station: Milan Central or Milan Rogoredo

  • Best for: Milan to Florence. Italo is ideal if you’re looking for a high-speed service that’s also affordable.

  • Onboard perks: Modern interiors, various carriage classes, multiple luggage storage areas and WiFi.

  • Ticket prices on Italo trains are often lower than those on Frecciarossa services, especially if you book in advance.

Milan to Florence travel tips

Booking train travel somewhere new can be daunting, but there are a few small things that make a big difference when it comes to guaranteeing a smooth journey from Milan to Florence by rail.

  • Cheaper fares get booked early: Prices on both Frecciarossa and Italo rise as departure time approaches. Booking in advance is the easiest way to secure lower fares, especially for peak morning and late-afternoon trains.
  • Choose your Milan departure station carefully: Milan Central is the main hub, making it best for most travellers. However, a lot of services depart from Milan Rogoredo, which could be closer if you’re staying south of the city centre. Be sure to check your ticket before travel, as the stations aren’t interchangeable.
  • Expect a fast and efficient journey: This is a high-speed connection designed for efficiency rather than scenery. You’ll move quickly from Milan’s city landscape into the Tuscan hills as you approach Florence, but it’s the speed that’s the real selling point.
  • Check live updates: High-speed trains in Italy are generally reliable, but platform changes or minor delays can occur at major stations like Milan Central. With TrainPal, you can view live train updates in one place after booking, making it easier to stay on track if plans change.

With TrainPal, you can compare Milan to Florence train tickets across Trenitalia and Italo services in one place, making it easy to find the best combination of price and departure time.
