Planning your journey: Trains from Florence to Rome

By Enrico Belcore | Updated August 6, 2026

Departure station: Departing from Firenze Santa Maria Novella

Firenze Santa Maria Novella (SMN) is Florence's main station and your departure point for all high-speed trains to Rome; both Frecciarossa and Italo services leave from here. It sits right in the city centre, a short walk from the Duomo and the basilica of Santa Maria Novella directly across the piazza, making it easy to reach from most central hotels without needing a taxi.
A small number of services also stop at Firenze Campo di Marte, Florence's secondary station, around 2 km east of the centre. If your ticket shows Campo di Marte as the departure point, budget an extra 15–20 minutes to get there by taxi (around €10–12) or local bus, as there is no direct metro connection.

The Firenze Santa Maria Novella station has several cafés across the concourse. For a proper Florentine espresso at a fair price, head to the smaller bar counters near the platforms rather than the main-entrance outlets or the cafes next to the station.

The official Kibag luggage storage is located inside the station near platform 16, with a street-side entrance on Via Valfonda, open daily 07:00–21:00. Prices start at around €6 for the first five hours.

Arrival station: Arriving at Roma Termini

You'll arrive at Roma Termini, Rome's main railway hub, centrally located and connected to both Metro Lines A and B. From the moment you step off the train, the Colosseum is reachable in around 15 minutes by metro, the Trevi Fountain in 20 minutes on foot or by bus, and most central hotels are a short taxi or metro ride away.

What if your ticket says Roma Tiburtina?

A handful of Florence–Rome services stop at Roma Tiburtina rather than Termini. Tiburtina is Rome's secondary high-speed station, located on the eastern edge of the city. Roma Tiburtina offers connections to Metro Line B, from where you can reach Termini in two stops or head directly toward the Colosseum at Colosseo station. It's well connected, but less central than Termini — budget an extra 20 minutes to reach the historic centre from here.

Getting from Roma Termini to your destination

  • Metro (fastest): Termini is the interchange for both Metro Line A (Vatican, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain area) and Metro Line B (Colosseum, Circus Maximus). Tickets cost €1.50 and can be bought from machines inside the station.
  • Taxi: The official taxi rank is directly outside the main exit on Piazza dei Cinquecento. Always use official white Rome taxis, and ensure the driver starts the meter. Expect €10–15 to most central destinations depending on traffic — Rome's city centre can be slow during peak hours.
  • On foot: Termini sits at the edge of the historic centre. The Baths of Diocletian are a 5-minute walk; Santa Maria Maggiore basilica is around 10 minutes away. For the Colosseum or the Vatican, the metro is a far better option than walking.
  • Watch your belongings at Termini. It's one of the busiest stations in Europe and a known hotspot for pickpockets — keep bags in front of you and be especially alert in the metro access areas and on the platforms.

Frecciarossa vs Italo: Which should you choose from Florence to Rome?

Florence to Rome is a major high-speed train corridor with plenty of daily options. You can choose between two main operators: state-run Trenitalia (Frecciarossa) and privately owned Italo. Both reach speeds of 300 km/h, making the journey fast and incredibly seamless. The main differences between the two lie in their ticket pricing, onboard classes, and loyalty programmes.

Frecciarossa

  • Avg. duration: from 1 hour 12 minutes on the fastest direct services
  • Departure station: Firenze Santa Maria Novella
  • Best for: Speed-focused travellers; business passengers; families taking advantage of Trenitalia's generous child discount policy; CartaFRECCIA loyalty card holders.
  • Onboard perks: Available in Standard, Premium, Business, and Executive classes, all with free Wi-Fi, reclining seats, luggage space, and access to the FrecciaBistrò carriage.
  • Worth knowing: Pricing is demand-led; Super Economy offers the lowest fares but no flexibility on changes or refunds, while base fares are fully exchangeable. Book through TrainPal as early as possible to catch the cheapest tier before it goes.

Italo

  • Avg. duration: around 1 hour 25 minutes
  • Departure station: Firenze Santa Maria Novella
  • Best for: Comfort-conscious travellers; those who appreciate a boutique private-operator experience; Italo Più loyalty members looking to accumulate points.
  • Onboard perks: Reclining leather seats with generous legroom and individual power outlets throughout all classes; complimentary Wi-Fi; at-seat snack and drink service; no pre-boarding check-in required; oversized luggage travels free. Club Executive passengers also gain access to Italo's dedicated lounges at Roma Termini and Firenze SMN.
  • Worth knowing: Like Frecciarossa, Italo uses dynamic pricing — but early bookers are often rewarded with fares well below the equivalent Trenitalia ticket. Worth comparing both on TrainPal before committing.

Intercity

  • Avg. duration: 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on stops
  • Departure station: Firenze Santa Maria Novella
  • Best for: Travellers with a relaxed itinerary who want a middle ground between regional and high-speed prices; those happy to trade a little time for a lower fare.
  • Onboard perks: First and Second Class seating with reclining chairs, power sockets, and free Wi-Fi — a more comfortable ride than Regionale without the premium of the Frecce trains.
  • Worth knowing: More intermediate stops mean a noticeably longer journey than Frecciarossa or Italo. On a route this well-served by fast trains at competitive prices, Intercity tends to appeal mainly to travellers whose schedules don't demand speed.

Regionale

  • Avg. duration: 3 to 4 hours, depending on stops
  • Departure station: Firenze SMN
  • Best for: Travellers on a tight budget with no time pressure; those who enjoy a slower, more unhurried journey through the Tuscan and Umbrian countryside.
  • Onboard perks: Comfortable enough seating, air conditioning, and overhead luggage racks, but no café car, so stock up on snacks and a drink before boarding.
  • Worth knowing: Unlike high-speed fares, Regionale tickets are fixed-price and don't fluctuate with demand; buying on the day costs exactly the same as booking weeks ahead. No reservation needed; board and find a free seat.

Florence to Rome travel tips

  • Book early: Rome to Florence runs on dynamic pricing; Frecciarossa and Italo's cheapest fares disappear fast, particularly on popular morning trains. Search both operators side by side on TrainPal to find the best available price without switching between sites.
  • Sit on the right: the most rewarding views of the journey come in the closing stretch as the train approaches Florence, with the Arno valley and Tuscan hills opening up on the right-hand side.
  • Digital tickets are pre-validated: buy through the TrainPal app and you can walk straight to the platform — no stamping machine required. Paper tickets must be validated before boarding or you risk an on-the-spot fine, even with a valid ticket in hand.
  • Track in real time: once booked, follow your train's live status directly in the TrainPal app so any delays are flagged before you leave your hotel.
  • Discounts worth checking: FrecciaYOUNG for under-30s, FrecciaFAMILY (children under 15 travel free), Insieme for groups of 3–5 (up to 60% off), and Italo Young for under-29 travellers (up to 70% off when booked at least 11 days ahead). All are searchable at checkout on TrainPal.
*Information is subject to change. Please check the latest train timetable before your trip.
