Planning your journey: Venice to Verona

By Joshua Pearson | Updated August 7, 2026

Departure station: Departing from Venice Mestre or Venice Santa Lucia

Venice has two main train stations, and which one you use for your train to Verona depends on where you're staying and the type of service you've booked. Both stations have the essentials that you would expect from a busy station, including cafés for you to grab a quick espresso before boarding and handy ticket machines. Venice Mestre has a wider range of shops and waiting areas, as it’s a key transport hub.

Sitting right on the Grand Canal, Venezia Santa Lucia is the most central option. If you're staying in the centre - in areas like San Marco, Dorsoduro, Cannaregio or near the Rialto - it’s usually the most convenient choice. High-speed services and regional trains both depart from here, with platforms clearly signposted inside the main concourse.

Venezia Mestre is located on the mainland, so if you're staying near Venice Marco Polo Airport or in Mestre itself, it’s usually the easier place to start your journey from Venice to Verona by rail. You might find fares or departure times slightly more flexible here, as more long-distance services pass through the station.

Arrival station: Arriving at Verona Porta Nuova or Verona Porta Vescovo

Trains from Venice to Verona arrive at Verona Porta Nuova, the city’s main railway station and the primary arrival point for rail passengers. Both Trenitalia and Italo operate services here, alongside regional trains serving destinations across northern Italy. Located around 20 minutes on foot from Piazza Bra and Verona Arena, Porta Nuova offers convenient onward travel by taxi or Verona's local bus network. Inside the station you'll find ticket offices, self-service machines, cafés, convenience stores, waiting areas, accessible facilities and a left luggage office.

Some services also stop at Verona Porta Vescovo, which is towards the east of the city centre. This station is mainly served by Trenitalia's regional trains and can be a convenient arrival point if you're staying in the east of Verona.

Travelling with Trenitalia and Italo: Onboard experience

The Venice to Verona train in Italy is operated by Trenitalia, with several high-speed Frecciarossa services running throughout the day.

Standard Class: Frecciarossa services

On the Venice to Verona Trenitalia trains, high speed is the focus. Standard Class is modern, quiet and designed for intercity trips like Venice to Verona. Seats boast decent legroom, and the interiors feel clean and simple. Frecciarossa provides a good balance on the Venice to Verona train route, offering both speed and comfort. Onboard features include plug sockets at most seats, air conditioning, overhead racks, end-of-carriage luggage space and reserved seating on many departures.

Is Frecciarossa First Class worth it?

On Frecciarossa services, First Class focuses on space rather than luxury. Seats are wider - arranged with more room between rows- and the carriage tends to be quieter. Depending on the service, you might also receive light refreshments and easier access to luggage storage areas. It’s a step up in comfort, but not always essential for a journey that usually takes just over an hour.

Luggage and practical comfort

Trenitalia is relatively relaxed about luggage on the Venice to Verona route. There are no strict weight checks, but storage is first come, first served. If you’re travelling with multiple bags, boarding a little early can make a difference in securing space near your seat.

Venice to Verona train travel time

The journey takes around one hour, or slightly longer if you’re departing from Venice Santa Lucia, and the route quickly transitions from waterside scenery to open countryside. On Frecciarossa trains, the ride is smooth and quiet, with minimal stops between Venice and Verona. It’s a short, efficient journey, designed to connect two major Italian cities quickly and comfortably.

Comparing Frecciarossa and Italo: Train from Venice to Verona

High-speed trains between Venice and Verona are operated by both Trenitalia (Frecciarossa) and Italo. Trenitalia runs the majority of services, including slower regional trains that operate throughout the day, in addition to its high-speed Frecciarossa trains. Italo also offers high-speed service on this route, though with a more limited daily schedule.

Trenitalia also operates Regionale and Regionale Veloce (RV) services between Venice and Verona, which take around 1 hour and 20 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. They're often cheaper and are a good option for flexible travel or visiting smaller towns along the route.

Venice to Verona travel tips

A train from Venice to Verona is quick and straightforward, but a few small choices can save money and avoid stress on the day.

  • Book early for better prices: Fares on Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa trains tend to increase closer to departure. If your plans are fixed, booking in advance is the easiest way to secure lower prices.
  • Keep an eye on live updates: Timetables are generally reliable, but platform changes and minor delays can happen. Once you’ve booked through TrainPal, you can check live train updates.
  • What you’ll see along the way: Don’t expect a scenic showcase, but you will notice the change from the Venice lagoons to the open Veneto countryside.
  • Double-Check before you book: Before booking, double-check you’re booking for the correct station, Verona Santa Lucia or Verona Mestre, and check the departure time, platform and train type.

With TrainPal, you can compare fares quickly and book in one place, without switching between multiple rail websites.
