While there’s currently no direct Leeds to Coventry train, the journey couldn’t be simpler. Board a CrossCountry service to Birmingham New Street, then quickly change for an Avanti West Coast train to Coventry. It’s about two and a half hours door to door, and services run every hour.

CrossCountry serves stations outside Greater London including Nuneaton, Bournemouth and York. Avanti West Coast covers destinations like Manchester Piccadilly, Rugby and Glasgow Central on the West Coast Main Line.

Departing from Leeds

Venture down to the West Midlands with ease from Leeds station. Whether you have plenty of luggage or are travelling light, the station is well served by public transport. You can also walk from the city centre, which takes no longer than ten minutes.

Leeds station has got you covered when it comes to rail travel. It’s a major stop on many routes, offering direct access to destinations like Penzance, Aberdeen and Blackpool. CrossCountry, Northern, TransPennine Express and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) operate passenger services.

Main stops

Stops on the journey from Leeds to Coventry will vary according to the train-operating company, route and time. The CrossCountry leg to Birmingham New Street may also stop at Sheffield, Chesterfield and Derby. Once you’re on the Avanti West Coast train, services could call at Birmingham International before reaching Coventry.

Arriving at Coventry

Reach the heart of Coventry and discover the city’s history, creativity and culture.  A must-see spot is the cathedral, bombed during the Second World War, leaving hollowed-out ruins and stained glass fragments. The tower is one of the few surviving parts, and climbing up offers unrivalled views of the city. Learn about local music heritage at the Coventry Music Museum. If relaxing in a café is more your jam, tuck into delicious sandwiches, homemade cakes, coffee and tea at Bean & Leaf.

It takes roughly 20 minutes to walk from Coventry train station to the majority of the city’s sights. Local buses also stop by the railway bridge or at the interchange next to the station.

Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway operate services to/from Coventry. Frequent trains link passengers to places like Kenilworth, Northampton and London Euston.

• Standard Class: You’ll find comfortable seats, a dedicated luggage area and free Wi-Fi access on both trains. The majority of CrossCountry services also sell hot and cold refreshments from 06:00 to 20:00. Book ahead to buy cheap train tickets.
• Standard Premium Class: Avanti West Coast offers Standard Premium Class on selected routes. These coaches include some First Class amenities, such as larger seating and additional legroom. Each window seat has a power socket.
• First Class: Opting for Leeds to Coventry First Class accommodation means you’ll enjoy wider seats and complimentary refreshments on both trains. At certain stations, Avanti West Coast passengers can use its First Class lounge. Birmingham New Street’s lounge is located in the blue zone. Lounges provide charging points, free Wi-Fi access and refreshments.

CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast train travel advice

• Luggage: The luggage limits per passenger for both operators are one small piece of hand luggage, one medium-sized bag and one large suitcase (90 x 70 x 30 centimetres max.).
• Bicycles: While CrossCountry advises reserving a space, it is required on Avanti West Coast trains. You’ll also need a copy of your reservation. E-bikes mustn’t exceed 250 watts, and devices like e-scooters are banned.
• Children: Both companies offer 50% off most fares for 5–15-year-olds and 16–17 Saver Railcard holders. Travel is free for under-5s with an adult. The Family and Friends Railcard also offers extra discounts.
• Pets: You can bring up to two pets on both services for free. Keep them off seats and in a secure carrier or on a lead.
• Passenger Assist: Ask CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast staff about assistance (e.g., carrying luggage) and pre-book help for your trip. Avanti West Coast recommends requesting assistance at least two hours before you travel.
