You can bring non-folding bikes on off-peak trains, but they are banned during weekday peak commuter hours. For trains arriving in London, this is between 07:00 and 09:59. 

If this route isn’t one you’re overly familiar with, it can seem daunting at first – especially the arrival at London Victoria. Luckily, we’ll share how to navigate both arrival and departure stations for a seamless transition and even share the sights to look out for from your window.

Departing from Gillingham (Kent)

Gillingham station is a classic town-centre station – you’ll find it just a 2–5-minute walk north from High Street or by getting an Arriva bus right outside on Railway Street or around the corner on Balmoral Road.

• Heading to the platform: There are just three platforms at Gillingham, located below street level. Services for London Victoria usually depart from Platform 1 or 2, which form an island in the middle of the station.
• Grabbing a bite: Remember, there’s no trolley on the train – you’ll find a coffee kiosk at the platform, as well as vending machines. If you’ve got time, local bakeries on High Street are just a 3-minute walk away – we recommend Boyce’s Bakery for their baguettes, pasties, sausage rolls and cream cakes. 

Onboard trains from Gillingham (Kent) to London Victoria

Although this line isn’t known for being one of the UK’s more scenic routes, you’ll still enjoy spotting some landmarks and river towns on this suburban journey.

• Key sights: You’ll cross the Medway Viaducts and pass Rochester Castle & Cathedral on your left before speeding past the woodlands at the edge of the Kent Downs. You’ll finish the journey with magnificent views of the London skyline on the right.
• Seating tip: The views are split – meaning you’ll need to choose between sitting on the left for views of Rochester Castle and Cathedral or the right for views of the London skyline and Battersea Power Station as you approach your destination. If the train is quiet, you could switch from left to right as you enter London for the best of both worlds!

Arriving at London Victoria

London Victoria can feel like a maze when you first arrive – knowing exactly where to head can save you from a frustrating experience. There are four main exits from the main concourse:

• The Victoria Street Exit: This is the main exit; head straight past platforms 1–8 to find it at the front of the station. It leads to the forecourt facing Victoria Street. Head this way for the Victoria bus station (for city buses) or to head to Buckingham Palace or Westminster Abbey/House of Parliament.
• The Cardinal Place Exit: This is the north exit – exit via the ticket barriers near Platforms 1 & 2 and follow signs towards the underground platforms until you find the stairs leading north. Head this way for corporate offices like Microsoft or Boeing, or for a quick lunch away from the crowds.
• The Hudson’s Place Exit: This exit is less obvious, hidden in the east of the station past Platform 1. This is the best exit for the taxi rank or residential neighbourhoods of Pimlico. 
• The Victoria Place Plaza Exit: This exit is on the upper level, so you’ll have to take the escalators in the middle of the concourse near Platforms 10–14 to the mezzanine shopping plaza. Walk through here to the far end to find the exit to Buckingham Palace Road. This is the best exit for Victoria Coach Station (for long-distance buses) or districts like Belgravia and Chelsea.
