Local insights: Salerno to Naples by train
For travellers holidaying on the Amalfi coast looking to spend a day in Naples, or those heading north from Campania, the train from Salerno to Naples is one of southern Italy’s most rewarding journeys, with views of smouldering Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples on your approach.
In as little as 23 minutes on board the fastest high-speed services, you can travel from the elegant, unhurried boulevards of Salerno to the magnificent, gloriously chaotic streets of Naples – one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in the world. And with over 100 direct services running each day to four stations across the city, getting there couldn't be easier.
As an official, authorised reseller for Trenitalia (including Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity and regional trains) and Italo (NTV), TrainPal offers secure bookings, live seat selection, official e-tickets and reliable customer support – everything you need to travel with confidence between two of southern Italy’s great cities.
Planning your journey: Trains from Salerno to Naples
Departure station: Departing from Salerno
Salerno's railway station sits at the heart of the city on Piazza Vittorio Veneto, and just a 5-10 minute walk from the historic centre and the seafront lungomare. Much calmer than Naples Centrale at the other end, it's a well-organised and manageable station that’s easy to navigate even if it's your first time in Salerno.
SITA Sud Buses from Amalfi, Positano and Ravello arrive into the station square, making Salerno an ideal base for further exploration along the coast by both train and bus. If you’re just heading to Naples for the day, or looking to return to Salerno before travelling further along the Amalfi coast, luggage storage is available via KiPoint on the ground floor, available from 06:00 to 23:00.
For a coffee before boarding, the Chef Express cafe inside the station serves espresso and pastries. Or, for something more authentically Salernitano, the cafes just outside the station along Corso Vittorio Emanuele are a short walk and considerably better.
Arrival station: Arriving into Naples Central, Naples Giovanni Barra, Naples Piazza Garibaldi, Naples Afragola
Naples is served by four stations on this route, and which one you arrive into can make a significant practical difference. It’s always worth double-checking your ticket carefully before travelling to make sure you’re heading to the right one.
Napoli Centrale
Stepping off the train at Napoli Centrale, you'll find yourself at the heart of one of Italy's most atmospheric cities. The station is vast and busy with 24 platforms handling everything from Frecciarossa high-speed services to regional commuter trains, but with clear signposting, it’s actually easier to navigate than its size might suggest.
From the underground level directly below the station, metro Lines 1 and 2 provide quick access to the historic centre. A single metro ticket costs €1.50. Taxis are also available at the official rank outside the main entrance on Piazza Garibaldi. Be sure to always use the white cars with meters and never accept offers from drivers approaching you inside the station. Luggage storage is available via KiPoint near Platform 2, open daily from 06:00 to 23:00.
Napoli Piazza Garibaldi
Napoli Piazza Garibaldi is the underground metropolitan station directly beneath Napoli Centrale, serving Line 2 of the Naples Metropolitan Railway and several Circumvesuviana lines. If your ticket shows Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, you're effectively arriving into the same complex as Napoli Centrale. Upon arrival, just follow the signs upward to the main hall where all connections are within easy reach.
Napoli San Giovanni-Barra
A suburban station in the eastern part of the city, Napoli San Giovanni-Barra serves as the eastern terminus of Line 2. It's not really a tourist destination in itself, but if you’ve got a ticket for this station, Line 2 connects directly to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi and Napoli Centrale in around 10 to 15 minutes.
Napoli Afragola
Located approximately 12 kilometres north of the city centre, Napoli Afragola serves high-speed trains on Italy’s main north-south corridor. Designed by Zaha Hadid, this striking station is architecturally extraordinary, and well worth a look in its own right, but takes a little planning to get into the city centre.
Taxis are the easiest way in with fares from Afragola to central Naples starting at €30 depending on traffic. The journey takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Buses also connect the station to Piazza Garibaldi and take about 20 minutes, though services can be irregular. Metro Line 10, currently under construction, will eventually connect Afragola to the city centre in around 20 minutes, but is not yet operational.
Frecciarossa, Italo or Regionale? Choosing your train from Salerno to Naples
With over 100 direct services between Salerno and Naples every day and journey times ranging from 23 minutes to just over 40, the Salerno to Naples route offers more flexibility than almost any other short hop in southern Italy. Which operator you pick is likely to come down to speed, cost, and which station in Naples you’re travelling to. Here’s how the options break down.
Frecciarossa
Trenitalia’s flagship high-speed service is the fastest option on this route, connecting Salerno to Napoli Centrale and Napoli Afragola at speeds of up to 300 km/h.
- Average journey time: 23-34 minutes
- Best for: Travellers who value speed and comfort, or those travelling to Naples as part of a longer Frecciarossa journey to Rome or further north
- Onboard perks: Free Wi-Fi, at-seat power sockets, onboard dining and four travel classes – Standard, Premium, Business and Executive
- Worth knowing: Frecciarossa tickets on this short route can be considerably more expensive than a regional fare. If speed is not your priority, the regional train makes the same journey at a fraction of the cost, only around 10-15 minutes slower. Tickets start from just under €9.
Italo
Italy’s private high-speed operator offers a stylish alternative to Frecciarossa on this Salerno to Naples corridor, with competitive fares and a modern onboard experience.
- Average journey time: 30-40 minutes
- Onboard perks: Free Wi-Fi, reclining leather seats with power outlets, Smart, Prima and Club Executive classes available
- Worth knowing: With fares starting at around €8, Italo advance fares can be cheaper than Frecciarossa for the same journey. Italo services arrive into both Napoli Centrale and Napoli Afragola.
Regional trains (Trenitalia Regionale)
The most affordable option by some distance, the regional train is a perfectly comfortable choice for the Salerno to Naples journey, particularly if you’re not in a rush.
- Average journey time: 37-42 minutes
- Best for: Budget-conscious travellers, day trippers and anyone happy to trade a few extra minutes for a significantly cheaper ticket
- Onboard perks: Comfortable seating, no reservation required – just buy your ticket and board
- Worth knowing: Tickets start from just under €5, making this the best value option on the route. Regional trains run every 20-30 minutes throughout the day, with frequent early morning departures from around 05:00.
Intercity
For travellers with an eye on their budget and a little more time to spare, Trenitalia’s Intercity service offers a relaxed and affordable alternative to the high-speed options on this route from Salerno to Naples.
- Average journey time: Around 50 minutes to 1 hour
- Best for: Budget-conscious travellers or those who prefer to relax with reserved seating
- Onboard perks: First and second class with reserved seating, and more spacious carriages than regional trains
- Worth knowing: Intercity tickets are priced on a fixed-fare basis rather than dynamic pricing, meaning you’ll pay the same price whenever you make your booking – even close to departure.
What to see and do in Naples: Top highlights near the station
Arriving into Naples, the city hits you immediately with noise, colour, smell and beauty in roughly equal measure. Here are some of the highlights within easy reach of the main station, Napoli Centrale.
- Spaccanapoli and the historic centre
Naples’ UNESCO-listed historic centre is the oldest continuously inhabited urban area in Europe and Spaccanapoli – the arrow-straight street that runs through it – is its beating heart. From the station, it’s a 10-15 minute walk west along Corso Umberto I to the historic centre, where the streets narrow, candle-lit shrines appear at street corners and the city reveals its true character.
- The National Archaeological Museum (MANN)
One of the greatest museums in the world and essential if you’re also visiting Pompeii, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples houses the finest collection of Greek and Roman antiquities in existence – including all the treasures excavated from Pompeii and Herculaneum that you won’t find at the sites themselves. Take Metro Line 2 from Napoli Centrale one stop to Museo. Allow yourself at least two hours – the Secret Cabinet alone, housing the more explicit Roman artefacts, is worth the ticket.
- Pizza at the source
Naples invented pizza, and eating it here is an altogether different experience from anywhere else on earth. The dough is softer, the crust charred at the edges, and the tomato sweeter – thanks to the volcanic soils of San Marzano at the foot of Vesuvius where the tomatoes are grown. Pizzeria Da Michele on Via Cesare Sersale is a 15-minute walk from the station, and since 1870 has been serving only two classic varieties – Margherita and Marinara. The queue moves faster than it looks.
- Castel dell’Ovo and the lungomare
For a change of pace from the crowded intensity of the old town, head to the seafront lungomare and the medieval Castel dell’Ovo at its southern end. Take metro Line 1 from Napoli Centrale to Toledo – winner of several awards for its stunning tiled interior – and walk to the seafront from there. The castle is free to enter and offers some of the best views out to the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius.
Salerno to Naples train classes
When traveling on Italian high-speed rail, such as Italo and Frecciarossa, you can select from multiple cabin classes ranging from basic Standard to premium Executive.
Other services, like the mid-tier Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, and traditional Intercity trains, typically feature a two-class system. If you take a local Regionale train, seating is limited to a single, standard class.
