Departure Station: Departing from Pisa Centrale

For a coffee before your train, head directly to Tiffany Café, located just across from Pisa Centrale's main entrance on Via Filippo Corridoni. It opens at 06:00, is packed with people on their way to work, and serves reliably good espresso and fresh cornetti at fair prices. Inside the station, you can find a ticketing hall, restrooms, several shops and fast-food restaurants, newsstands, a tobacconist, and a tourist information office just outside on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.

The staffed left luggage office is located at the end of Platform 1. Walk towards the right side of the platform and look for the small "Left Luggage" sign. It costs €5 per bag for the whole day, open 08:00 to 21:00. You'll need to show ID when dropping off and collecting. Make sure to bring your passport or identity card.

Arrival Station: Arriving at Firenze Santa Maria Novella

Florence has no metro line connecting the station to the historic centre, but with a city this compact, you rarely need one. Taxis queue directly outside the main exit on Via Valfonda, which you can also book in advance through a ridesharing app. City buses also depart from the forecourt.

How to reach the Piazza del Duomo

Intercity

• Avg. duration: around 1 hour
• Best for: Travellers wanting an assigned seat and more comforts than the Regionale.
• Onboard perks: First and Second Class assigned seating, air conditioning, luggage racks, and bar service on most services.
• Worth knowing: Unlike Regionale tickets, a reservation on Intercity trains is required. Note that Intercity trains do not stop at Pisa San Rossore, so if you're departing from near the Leaning Tower, you'll need to make your way to Pisa Centrale first.

Regionale & Regionale Veloce

• Avg. duration: around 1 hour
• Best for: Day-trips, budget travellers, and tourists interested in visiting the Leaning Tower.
• Onboard perks: Air conditioning and luggage space; no café car.
• Worth knowing: Fares are fixed — buying on the day costs exactly the same as booking in advance. No seat reservation required. Regionale Veloce makes fewer intermediate stops making the trip a bit quicker than Regionale trains.

Validate Your Ticket Before Boarding

Regionale tickets are open, valid on any train that day rather than tied to a specific departure, but they must be stamped in the green or yellow validation machines on the platform before you board. A valid ticket that hasn't been stamped can still result in an on-the-spot fine, so don't skip this step. However, tickets purchased digitally through TrainPal, Trenitalia, or Italo are validated automatically at the point of purchase, so no machine is needed.

Italian regional trains are generally punctual, but delays can happen, especially during peak hours or during busy periods. The Pisa-Florence line passes through the gentle hills and vineyards of the Arno valley. Sit on the right side of the train to enjoy the rolling hills of Tuscany in all their charm. The route also skips through the small town of Empoli, worth visiting if you have time to spare on your trip.
