Balham train station

Balham station is a south-west London interchange in the London Borough of Wandsworth. With entrances to the Underground station on both sides of Balham High Road, the mainline station shares an entrance with the Tube on the south side. The number four seems to be a special number for Balham. The station is just four stops from the major terminus, London Victoria. There are four tracks and four platforms. It is between four stations. And its name changed four times.

Originally named Balham Hill, the station was opened by the West End of London and Crystal Palace Railway in 1856. It was located on the west side of Balham High Road before being moved in 1863 to expand the line and improve the route between East Croydon and Victoria. Additional works to increase capacity took place in 1890 and 1897. The station was then known as Balham, then renamed Balham and Upper Tooting in 1927, only to revert to Balham in 1969.

Today, Balham station has waiting shelters and seating areas, refreshment facilities, and a ticket office. If you book train tickets online, you can collect them from one of the machines.
