First Class vs Standard — what to choose?

• Standard Class includes free Wi-Fi, power outlets and access to the onboard café bar in Coach C, where you can pick up hot drinks, snacks and sandwiches. Carriages can get busy on Friday evenings and Monday mornings, particularly among commuters and business travellers heading to and from the City.
• First Class offers spacious reclining seats in a quieter 2+1 carriage, with extra legroom, a table at every seat, 3-pin outlets and USB ports. Hot and cold drinks and snacks are brought to your seat direclty from the café bar. There are no dedicated First Class lounges at Norwich or Liverpool Street.

What is the luggage allowance?

Small bags can be kept under your seat, medium-sized cases go in the overhead racks, and larger items should be stored in the dedicated luggage areas at the ends of each carriage. Greater Anglia recommends no more than 2 large items of luggage per person

Is Greater Anglia First Class Worth It on Norwich to London Liverpool Street?

First Class is especially valuable on a weekday morning or evening if you want a quieter and more comfortable space for working (guaranteed table space + free coffee included). During off-peak periods, the Standard fare-to-comfort ratio is hard to beat, especially on a shorter route like this, where you won’t take full advantage of the First Class bar. 

Norwich: Getting to the Platform

Reach the station by bus –  Routes 25 and 35 link the station directly to the city centre and Norwich University or simply walk from the city centre (approximately 15–20 minutes)

Norwich is a compact and easy station to navigate. The booking hall and ticket machines are at the main entrance. A café, convenience store and waiting room are available on the concourse. There are accessible toilets and a Changing Places facility. 

Onboard trains from Norwich to London Liverpool Street

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, along with USB charging points and air conditioning. A cafe bar carriage is available on most journeys, serving hot and cold drinks and snacks.

The scenic side

The countryside along the Great Eastern Main Line is quintessentially East Anglian, with wide skies, gently rolling fields, and small towns. Around Manningtree, the River Stour briefly comes into view, marking the border between Suffolk and Essex.

Key landmarks

Look out for Colchester as the train slows through Essex — Britain's oldest recorded town, with its distinctive Norman castle visible from the railway. The River Stour at Manningtree is the widest river estuary in England, especially beautiful in the golden light of the morning. 

Arriving at Liverpool Street

The correct exit

• Liverpool Street Exit (Main / West): The primary exit leads onto Liverpool Street itself, at the western side of the station. Best to reach Bishopsgate and the nearest bus stops

• Bishopsgate Exit (East): Located on the eastern side of the concourse, this exit is the more convenient route for Spitalfields, Shoreditch, and the northern part of the City. The Elizabeth line entrance at Broadgate is also accessible from this side.

• Old Broad Street Exit: A quieter exit on the south side of the station, useful if heading towards the Bank of England, the Gherkin or Cannon Street. This exit is step-free at street level.

Onward Travel

• London Underground: Liverpool Street is served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines within the station. The Central line platforms are deep underground, accessible by escalator and lift. These lines connect Liverpool Street to the West End, King's Cross, Paddington, Victoria and beyond.

• Elizabeth Line: The Elizabeth line stop is at Broadgate, accessible via the eastern side of the station. It connects Liverpool Street westwards to Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Paddington and Heathrow.  

• Buses: Numerous TfL bus routes stop on Liverpool Street, Bishopsgate and Old Broad Street outside the various exits, serving routes across central and east London.

• Taxis: Black taxi ranks are located outside the Liverpool Street exit and the Bishopsgate exit. Alternatively, several rideshare pick-up points are designated nearby.

Walkability

Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane are 5–10 minutes on foot heading east. The Sky Garden and the Gherkin are around 10 minutes to the south. The Museum of London Docklands (at West India Quay) is a short Elizabeth line ride away, and Shoreditch and the restaurants and bars of the Northern Quarter are within a 15-minute walk heading northeast.
