Enjoy city views as you leave the capital and head to the airport in less than an hour. Greater Anglia’s Stansted Express travels from London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport in as little as 45 minutes.
In addition to the Stansted Express, Greater Anglia offers intercity and commuter services between Liverpool Street station and Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk as well as parts of Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. Regional trains also serve the East of England. Cambridge, Norwich and Great Yarmouth are just some of the destinations.
Departing from London Liverpool Street
The London to Stansted train departs from London Liverpool Street station. Located on the northeastern corner of the City of London, Liverpool Street is a major railway terminus and one of the busiest stations in the UK.
Liverpool Street is on the Circle, Metropolitan, Central and Hammersmith & City lines. Many buses and taxis are available outside the station.
Services at Liverpool Street station include commuter and suburban trains to the East of England, Essex and Hertfordshire in addition to the Stansted Express. Greater Anglia, c2c, London Overground and Elizabeth line trains alight at stations like Reading, Colchester, Cambridge and Broxbourne.

Trains from London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport may stop at Tottenham Hale, Bishops Stortford and Harlow Town. Stops vary according to the time, operator and route.
Arriving at Stansted Airport
Located 36 miles (60 kilometres) from Liverpool Street, Stansted Airport station is directly beneath Stansted Airport’s terminal building. The station is the busiest in Essex. Journeys from Stansted Airport station cover a wide range of destinations, including Harlow Town, Ely and Leicester.
Greater Anglia and CrossCountry are the only operators serving the station. Local buses providing connections to nearby towns and villages stop at the bus station, as well as national coaches.
Plane spotters can find a prime spot on Belmer Road. Stansted Airport is near the historic market town of Bishop’s Stortford and the gorgeous medieval town of Saffron Walden. Mountfitchet Castle, Hatfield Forest and the Henry Moore Studios & Gardens are some of the nearest attractions.
Greater Anglia train classes
- Standard Class: Travelling in Standard Class gives you access to free WiFi. Carriages are fitted with USB ports and plug sockets. Book early to buy cheap train tickets.
- First Class: First Class is no longer available on Stansted Express trains. For other Greater Anglia services, First Class amenities include roomier seats with more legroom, tables and refreshments during weekday services.
Greater Anglia train travel advice
- Luggage: The Stansted Express has no luggage limit, and the restrictions for larger bags (two large suitcases no larger than 158 centimetres or heavier than 32 kilograms) aren’t enforced on other Greater Anglia services.
- Bicycles: Only folded bikes are allowed on the Stansted Express. Other Greater Anglia trains require a reservation (free of charge). Peak-time restrictions apply in London and Cambridge.
- Children: Under-5s travel free, and 5–15-year-olds, as well as 16–17 Saver Railcard holders, get most tickets half price (including the Stansted Express).
- Pets: Two cats, dogs or small domestic animals are allowed per passenger when kept in a carrier or on a lead. They mustn’t occupy any seats.
- Passenger Assist: Supports your journey with planning, train selection, scheduling, ticket purchasing, boarding, alighting (ramps and sight guidance), station navigation, and safe handling of up to three pieces of luggage.
