A major interchange on the East Coast Main Line for trains across northern England, Doncaster railway station is located just a short walk from the city centre and directly connected to the Frenchgate shopping centre. The second-busiest station in South Yorkshire, it’s an important hub for both long-distance and regional services.

• The Platform Tip: Trains to Sheffield from Northern, TransPennine Express and CrossCountry typically depart from Platforms 3B, 5 or 8. Check the departure screens before heading to your platform, as these can change, particularly during busy periods.
• Pre-Departure: The concourse has several cafés and shops if you want to grab a drink or snack before boarding. Seating areas and mobile charging points are also available, while lifts provide step-free access to all platforms.

Onboard trains from Doncaster to Sheffield

Once onboard, the landscape shifts quickly from the flat plains around Doncaster to the greener, hillier terrain as you near Sheffield.

• The View Alert: Try to sit on the right-hand side of the train as you head south, and keep an eye out for the wooded hills that mark the edge of the Peak District as you climb towards Sheffield.
• Key Landmarks: Shortly after departure, you'll pass Doncaster Racecourse, one of Britain's oldest horse racing venues. The route then runs through the Dearne Valley, where on clear days you may catch a glimpse of Conisbrough Castle, a striking 12th-century Norman keep, on the skyline.

Arriving at Sheffield

Sheffield station sits on the edge of the city centre beside the striking open space of Sheaf Square, home to the Cutting Edge sculpture, a nod to Sheffield's steel industry. As the busiest station in South Yorkshire, it is a major hub for trains from across northern England and the Midlands.

• The Sheaf Square Exit: Most passengers leave via the main entrance facing Sheaf Square. From here you can walk straight into the city centre, with shops, restaurants and hotels just a few minutes' walk away. It’s also the easiest route to the taxi rank and the nearby car park.
• The Supertram Connection: On the east side of the station, you’ll find the South Yorkshire Supertram stop. Trams run frequently across Sheffield to areas such as Hillsborough, Meadowhall and Halfway, making the Supertram one of the easiest ways to get around the city.
• Onward Travel: Buses depart from stops around Sheaf Street and the surrounding area, while taxis line up outside the main entrance. Much of central Sheffield, including the shopping district and cultural quarter, can easily be reached on foot.
