Cardiff Central: Getting to the Platform

Cardiff Central is the largest and busiest railway station in Wales, located right in the city centre at Central Square and well connected by local buses and taxis. The station sits on the South Wales Main Line, making it a key hub for trains both across Wales and into England.

• The Platform Tip: Long-distance services towards Bristol, London and the West of England usually depart from platforms 0-4. Platforms are typically announced shortly before departure, so it’s best to wait near the departure boards before heading to your platform.
• Pre-Departure: The main concourse has plenty of facilities including coffee shops, food outlets and convenience stores, if you want to grab a drink or a quick bite before boarding. If you’re arriving from the city centre, the Central Square entrance provides the most direct access to the ticket hall and platforms.

Once onboard, the short journey from Cardiff to Bristol follows one of the most historic rail corridors between Wales and England, crossing the Severn Estuary via the celebrated Severn Tunnel before continuing into the heart of Bristol.

• The Temple Gate Exit: Take the main entrance on Station Approach (Temple Gate) for the ticket hall, taxi ranks and bus stops. From here, it’s just a 15-20 minute walk into Bristol city centre, including Cabot Circus and the Harbourside.
• The Temple Quay Exit: Use the Temple Quay side of the station if you’re heading towards Bristol’s business district or riverside offices. This exit also provides access to the Bristol Ferry Boat service at Floating Harbour.
• Onward Travel: Taxi ranks are located on the station forecourt on Station Approach, just outside the main exit. Local buses depart from stops on the forecourt and along Temple Gate, the main road at the end of Station Approach. For passengers travelling to Bristol Airport, the A1 Airport Flyer runs from outside the station approximately every 7 minutes and takes just over half an hour.
