First Class vs Standard — What to choose?

• First Class includes extra legroom, wider seats, and more spacious cabins. Snacks and drinks are served on board, and access to exclusive GWR First Class Lounges before departure is available. Seats are arranged in a 2+1 layout, with single seats available for solo travellers.

What is the luggage allowance?

GWR allows generous luggage allowances on all services. Passengers can bring up to two large pieces of luggage plus one smaller carry-on bag (such as a rucksack or laptop bag) without additional charge. There is ample luggage storage space throughout the train, including overhead racks and designated storage areas at the end of carriages. Bicycles can be brought on board on most services; a free reservation is required and space is limited.

What happens if my train is delayed?

GWR has a Delay Repay compensation scheme that reimburses passengers if trains arrive late at their destination. If your train arrives 15 minutes or more late, you are entitled to compensation. The amount depends on your ticket type and the length of delay. Claims must be made within 28 days of your delay. You can claim compensation through GWR's online portal, mobile app, or by completing a paper form available at staffed stations.

The route follows the Great Western Main Line, one of the most historically significant railway lines in Britain, built in the 1840’s to connect Bath's directly to the capital.

Bath Spa: Getting to the Platform

Bath Spa station is located in Manvers Street, just a short walk from the city centre. Trains to London Paddington typically depart from Platform 1. If you’re unsure, check the digital departure boards for the most up-to-date platform information. Tickets can be purchased at the station’s self-service machines or ticket office before boarding. You can find cafes inside the station for a quick bite or a coffee before your train.

The scenic side

For the most scenic approach to London, including great views of the River Avon, choose a seat on the Right-Hand Side of the carriage (facing West). Make sure you have a window seat, so you can get a nice view over the waters of the River Avon.

Key landmarks

Between Didcot and Swindon, look to your right to see a ridge of hills to the south where you can make out the famous Bronze Age Uffington White Horse, created with trenches filled with chalk. As the train approaches London, watch out for Windsor Castle on the right.

Arriving at London Paddington

London Paddington today welcomes an estimated 60,000 passengers every day. The station is also famous for its connection to the beloved Paddington Bear children's book series.

The correct exit

• Praed Street Exit (Main Exit): The main entrance and exit on Praed Street is your most direct route to street level, taxis and buses. 
• Eastbourne Terrace Exit: A quieter exit on the north side of the station, useful for pre-booked taxis and drop-off points.
• Taxi Deck: The taxi rank is situated above Platform 12, accessed via escalators and lifts from the concourse — with a covered marshalled rank and separate collection point for pre-booked cabs.

Onward Travel

• The Underground is directly accessible within the station, serving the Bakerloo, District, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, plus the Elizabeth line for fast connections across London. 
• The Heathrow Express also departs from Paddington, reaching Heathrow Airport in just 15 minutes. 

Walkability 

Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Regent's Canal are all within easy walking distance of Paddington.
