What is the Great British Rail Sale (GBRS)?

Train operating companies across England and Wales are offering up to 50% off selected Advance tickets for over 1 million journeys. Participating train companies and ticket retailers will provide discounted fares. If a participating train company doesn't offer Advance tickets, Off-Peak tickets may be offered as an alternative.

GBRS tickets will be on sale from 14 Jan to 20 Jan, 2025. Tickets can be purchased for travels between 17 Jan and 31 Mar, 2025. Tickets must be purchased at least 3-7 days in advance of the travel date.

Where can I buy GBRS tickets?

GBRS tickets can be purchased online from TrainPal and participating train companies operating in England and Wales. Please note that Elizabeth Line, Gatwick Express, Heathrow Express, Hull Trains, London Overground, London Underground, Lumo, Merseyrail, and Stansted Express are excluded from this promotion.

Do I have to buy tickets in advance or will they be available on the day of travel?

Tickets must be booked in advance. The Great British Rail Sale tickets must be booked at least 3-7 days before the travel date.
What is the maximum number of GBRS tickets I can buy?

You can buy as many as you want. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Why can't I find any tickets for my chosen journey in the GBRS?

GBRS tickets are not available on all routes and are subject to availability and exclusions. If you can't find what you're looking for on your train company's or ticket retailer's website, it could be that the journey is either sold out or not included in the sale.
How do I reserve a seat for my journey?

GBRS tickets may be issued with reservation tickets, which must be carried when travelling. If the train company does not offer seat reservations on your train, your ticket will specify the date and time of travel. In these cases, you may sit in any available seat on the specified train, appropriate to the class of your ticket.
Can I get a refund on a GBRS ticket?

Unless you are unable to travel due to a delay or cancellation, you can change the time or date of your journey before your first reserved train departs. Any fare difference and an administration fee will be payable before travel.
Can I use my railcard to get a discount on GBRS tickets?

No, there is no additional discount available with Railcard.
I have a GBRS ticket, will I get a first-class upgrade?

This promotion is limited to Standard Class tickets. Some participating Train Companies may offer First Class or Standard Premium tickets, but availability is at their discretion.
Does the Great British Rail Sale apply to London underground or overground services?

No, the Great British Rail Sale does not apply to London Underground or Overground services. It is only available on train operating companies in England and Wales, excluding London Overground, London Underground, Elizabeth Line, Gatwick Express, Heathrow Express, Hull Trains, Lumo, Merseyrail, and Stansted Express.
