Coming from the ferry?

The pier at Varenna is just a 5-minute walk from the station entrance — time your ferry return to give yourself at least 10–15 minutes buffer before your train departs, as the lake timetable and train timetable don't always align perfectly.

Arrival station: Arriving at Milano Centrale

Taxis queue outside the main exit on Piazza Duca d'Aosta. Most central hotels are 10–20 minutes away by metro, and most major sights are well within reach without a taxi.

Connecting onward from Centrale

Trenord operates regional and suburban rail services throughout Lombardy. It's essentially the local counterpart to Trenitalia — partly under the same ownership, but dedicated exclusively to Lombardy routes, covering the lake and mountain connections that national trains skip.

The Milan-Perledo route runs as a regional service rather than high-speed, with two ticket tiers available:

Second Class

Seats face both directions in a 2+2 arrangement. Carriages stay clean and climate-controlled, and power outlets at most seats let you keep your phone charged during the ride.

First Class

The seating layout mirrors second class — the same 2+2 configuration, so don't count on significantly more legroom or plusher seats. What you're really paying for is a calmer ride: fewer passengers and less noise, which matters a lot on a crowded summer Saturday morning.

Luggage isn't restricted or charged for on these regional trains, so pack your suitcase or backpack freely. Smaller bags fit in the overhead bins, while bulkier suitcases belong in the designated areas by the carriage doors.

• Fares stay flat: Trenord doesn't reward advance booking with lower prices — the fare is identical whether you purchase today or a month out.
• Watch the board carefully: your train will display Tirano or Sondrio as the destination, not Varenna, so double-check the route and stops before hopping on.
• Stamp paper tickets: use the yellow platform machines to validate before you board — digital tickets skip this step since they're already validated.
• National passes won't cover you: Trenitalia's Italia In Tour and similar rail passes don't extend to Trenord services, so you'll need to purchase a standalone ticket regardless of what pass you're carrying elsewhere in Italy.
• Stay updated on timing: track your train's status live through the TrainPal app once you've booked, so any delays don't take you by surprise.
