Local insights: Bologna to Milan by train

By Mark Wilshin | Updated September 22, 2026

Less than an hour apart by high-speed train, Bologna and Milan are closer than their 230km distance might suggest, with Italo and Frecciarossa serving the route between Italy’s food and fashion capitals in less time than it takes to finish a cappuccino. Whether you're heading to Milan for sightseeing, shopping or football, the trains along this well-served northern corridor are fast and remarkably affordable when booked in advance.

As an official, authorised ticketing reseller for Trenitalia (including Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity and regional trains) and Italo (NTV), TrainPal offers secure bookings, live seat selection, official e-tickets and reliable customer support – everything you need to travel with confidence between two of northern Italy’s most rewarding cities.

Planning your journey: Trains from Bologna to Milan

Departure station: Departing from Bologna Centrale

Sitting at the junction where the north-south high-speed line and the east-west regional network intersect, Bologna Centrale is one of Italy’s most strategically important railway stations, and it's busier and more complex than its size might suggest. Because of this, the station operates on two distinct levels, and which one you need depends entirely on where you’re headed and which train you're catching.

The ground-level platforms (1-11) handle slower regional services to nearby destinations such as Modena, Ferrara, Parma, Ravenna. The high-speed trains to Milan – Frecciarossa and Italo – depart from the underground Alta Velocità platforms (16-19), located three levels below the main concourse. Platforms 16 and 17 handle northbound services to Milan, Turin and Venice, while platforms 18 and 19 handle southbound services to Florence, Rome and Naples. Allow at least 10-15 minutes to get from the main hall to the AV platforms, especially if you're travelling with heavy luggage.

The main entrance is on Piazza della Medaglie d’Oro, and leads directly into the concourse. Luggage storage is available at the KiPoint office at Piazzale Ovest, next to platform 7, open daily from approximately 07:00 to 21:00. The FrecciaClub lounge for executive class travellers and eligible CartaFRECCIA members is located at the head of platform 1.

For a coffee before boarding, the bars in the main hall and Piazzale Ovest are convenient and reasonably priced by station standards, and there’s a Rossopomodoro serving decent pizza within the station itself, as well as some fast food outlets. One note: if you're travelling on a regional train, remember to validate your paper ticket in the yellow machines before boarding, as failing to do so can result in an on-the-spot fine.

Arrival station: Arriving at Milano Centrale, Rogoredo or Porta Garibaldi

High-speed trains from Bologna serve three stations in Milan, and which one you arrive into depends on the service you choose. The stations are spread across the city serving different neighbourhoods, so always check your ticket carefully.

Milano Centrale

Pulling into Milano Centrale is an experience all by itself. Dating back to 1931, the station is a monumental Art Deco building, and its grand facade on Piazza Duca d’Aosta is one of the most impressive pieces of architecture in the city. Serving 120 million passengers a year, it's one of the busiest stations in Europe, but is surprisingly well organised once you understand its layout and how it works.

Trains arrive on the upper level – take the escalators or the grand staircase down from the platforms to the main entrance hall below, where you'll find the ticket office, KiPoint luggage storage (open approximately 06:00 to 23:00), shops and the entrance to the metro. Allow 10-15 minutes to move between the platform level and the station exits, especially if you’re travelling with heavy luggage.

Metro lines M2 (green) and M3 (yellow) both connect directly from Centrale FS metro station located underneath the main building. M3 runs four stops to the Duomo in around 8 minutes. Taxis are available outside the main entrance on Piazza Duca d’Aosta, with fares to the city centre typically around €10-15. Airport buses to Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo (Orio al Serio) depart from both sides of the station building.

Milano Rogoredo

Located 5 kilometres southeast of the city centre, Milano Rogoredo is a compact, modern station also serving both high-speed and regional services, and a much calmer – if less awe-inspiring – arrival experience than Centrale. If your hotel is in the south or east of Milan, or you're continuing on towards Genoa or Rome, Rogoredo can actually be more convenient than Centrale. High-speed trains use platforms 5 to 8, and a FrecciaClub lounge is available at the station for eligible Frecciarossa passengers.

Metro Line M3 (yellow) connects directly from Rogoredo FS station beneath the main building, reaching the Duomo in around 15 to 20 minutes and Milano Centrale in a similar time. Taxis are available outside the main entrance on Via Cassinis.

Milano Porta Garibaldi

Located right in the heart of the Porta Nuova business district and one of the most rapidly developing areas of the city, Milano Porta Garibaldi is Milan's main commuter hub, serving 25 million passengers a year. Metro Lines M2 (green) and M5 (lilac) both serve Garibaldi FS station from directly below the mainline station, with the M2 connecting to the Duomo in two stops. The station is also the Milan terminus for TGV services to and from Paris as well as Intercity Notte services to Naples, making it an important hub for longer national and international journeys. Taxis and trams are available outside the main entrance on Piazza Sigmund Freud.

Frecciarossa or Italo? Choosing your train from Bologna to Milan

With many direct services each day and journey times potentially as short as 55 minutes, the Bologna to Milan route is one of Italy’s busiest and best served high-speed corridors. Both Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa and private operator Italo cover the route at speeds of up to 300 kilometres an hour with intercity services offering a slower but cheaper alternative. Here's how the options compare up-close.

Frecciarossa

Trenitalia’s flagship high-speed service runs frequently between Bologna Centrale and Milano Centrale throughout the day, covering the route in as little as 55 minutes.

  • Average journey time: Between 55 minutes and 2 hours
  • Best for: Travellers wanting the fastest journey, the most frequent service, the widest choice of departure times and access to Trenitalia’s CartaFRECCIA loyalty programme
  • Onboard perks: Free Wi-Fi, at-seat power sockets, a cafe car and four travel classes – Standard, Premium, Business and Executive
  • Worth knowing: Advance super economy fares can be very competitive, so book early for the best prices.

Italo

Italy's private high-speed operator offers a strong alternative on the Bologna to Milan corridor, with its modern, comfortable onboard experience and advance fares starting from around €12.90.

  • Average journey time: 1 hour 2 minutes to 1 hour 22 minutes
  • Best for: Travellers looking for competitive fares and a contemporary onboard environment, or those continuing on an Italo service to Venice or Turin
  • Onboard perks: Free Wi-Fi, reclining leather seats with power outlets and Smart, Prima and Club Executive classes available
  • Worth knowing: Italo advance fares frequently undercut Frecciarossa on this route, so worth comparing both operators before booking.

Intercity

Trenitalia’s Intercity services offer a slower but more affordable option on the standard network for travellers with time to spare.

  • Average journey time: Around 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours
  • Best for: Budget-conscious travellers or those who don't need the fastest service
  • Onboard perks: First and second class with reserved seating
  • Worth knowing: Intercity tickets are generally cheaper than high-speed fares, particularly for last-minute bookings.

What to see and do in Milan: Top highlights near the station

Milano Centrale is one of Europe’s great railway stations – a monumental Art Deco homage to the spirit of the railway and still one of the most impressive pieces of architecture in the city. Located approximately 3km from the historic centre, you’re only a 30-minute walk or a short metro ride from exploring everything Milan has to offer.

  • The Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The largest in Italy and the third largest in the world, Milan's extraordinary Gothic cathedral is the city’s undisputed centrepiece. Take metro Line 3 (yellow) four stops from Centrale FS to Duomo and you can be standing on its roof looking over the city within 15 minutes of leaving the station. Right next door, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a 19th century glass-vaulted shopping arcade, and one of the most beautiful public spaces in Italy. Spin your heel on the bull mosaic on the floor for good luck.

  • The Last Supper (Santa Maria delle Grazie)

Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, painted directly onto the wall of a refectory beside the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, is one of the city's (and the world’s) most visited works. Entry is limited to 25 people at a time in 15-minute slots, and tickets sell out weeks in advance. Take metro Line 2 (green) from Centrale FS to Cadorna, then a short walk.

  • Pinacoteca di Brera
Housed in a 17th century palazzo in the elegant Brera neighbourhood, the Pinacoteca di Brera is Milan's finest art museum and holds one of the most important collections of Italian paintings in the world, including Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin and Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus. The Brera neighbourhood surrounding the gallery is full of independent boutiques, galleries and excellent restaurants. Take metro Line 2 to Lanza, then a short walk.
  • Mercato Centrale Milano

If you're hungry when you arrive, skip the standard station outlets and head directly to Mercato Centrale, located on the ground floor of Milano Centrale itself. With an excellent selection of fresh pasta, pizza, artisanal cheese, pastries and coffee from some of Milan’s best producers, it’s one of the best food halls in Italy and far better than anything else in the station.

Bologna to Milan train classes

Italy's high-speed trains (such as the Frecciarossa and Italo services) offer multiple classes of travel, ranging from Standard up to Executive.

The mid-tier and traditional intercity services (Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, and Intercity) typically offer a simpler choice between two classes, whereas the local commuter trains (Regionale) only have a single standard seating area.

Compare these options to find the perfect ticket for your journey from Bologna to Milan.
