Surbiton train station
Surbiton station is located in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in south-west London. The London and Southampton Railway failed to get authorisation to build a mainline route through Kingston, as the Kingston Corporation feared it could impact its coaching trade. As a result, Kingston’s first station opened south of the town in 1838, later relocating west to Surbiton, then only farmland. The station was renamed several times, including Surbiton and Kingston in 1863, after the current Kingston station opened, then Surbiton in 1867.
Surbiton was entirely rebuilt in 1937. Like Richmond (London) station, the Art Deco-style building was designed by James Robb Scott. A Grade II-listed building, Surbiton is highly regarded as one of the country’s greatest modernist station buildings. The station features three entrances, public WiFi hotspots, self-service ticket machines to buy train tickets, and two island platforms. A ticket office is located in the booking hall.
